About the race
The 1 Mile Yates Swim is a storied tradition in Atlantic City, deeply woven into the local culture and organized with pride by the Atlantic City Beach Patrol. Named in memory of Harry Yates, this event has long served as a focal point for the swimming community, drawing generations of athletes to the iconic New Jersey coastline. The race is more than just a competition; it is a celebration of the legendary lifeguard heritage that defines this stretch of the Atlantic.
Participants represent a diverse mix of local enthusiasts and visiting swimmers, all drawn by the unique opportunity to test their mettle in the historic ocean waters where many of the East Coast’s most skilled lifeguards are trained. The atmosphere is authentically 'Jersey Shore,' featuring a post-race beach barbecue that turns a serious athletic challenge into a welcoming community gathering. Because it is conducted under the professional oversight of the Atlantic City Beach Patrol, the event offers a secure, well-managed environment, making it an excellent choice for those looking to experience the thrill of an open-ocean swim without sacrificing safety.
Beyond the race, the location at Albany Avenue places you at the heart of one of America’s most famous seaside destinations. The sweeping views of the Atlantic and the expansive, golden sands provide a stunning backdrop for both the race and the inevitable post-swim relaxation. Whether you are a seasoned open-water veteran or a dedicated swimmer looking to mark a milestone, the Yates Swim offers an unparalleled blend of history, sportsmanship, and coastal charm. After you have crossed the finish line and enjoyed the festivities, there is plenty more to discover in the area; you might want to find a place to stay nearby to rest up or take a little time to organize a full weekend of exploration along the boardwalk and beyond.
