About the race

Driving into San Pedro, the industrial silhouette of the Port of Los Angeles begins to dominate the horizon long before you reach the coast. The approach to Cabrillo Beach reveals a stretch of shoreline where the modern maritime activity of Southern California meets a raw, shifting history. As you pull into the parking area near the historic bathhouse, the salt air carries a weight that feels distinct from the typical beach day, grounding you in a place that has been shaped by both human enterprise and geological volatility.

A landscape in flux. Once you enter the water, the horizon is anchored by the imposing structure of Municipal Warehouse No. 1, a 1917 landmark that stands as a silent sentinel over the main channel. Swimming here, you are moving through a geography that is perpetually redefining itself. To the south, the cliffs of Point Fermin hide the remnants of the Sunken City, where the earth famously surrendered to the ocean in 1929, dragging coastal homes into the Pacific at a rate of nearly a foot a day. It is a humbling reminder of the coastal instability that characterizes this stretch of the California bight, a stark contrast to the rigid, steel-hulled presence of the SS Lane Victory museum ship, which often looms in the distance as a static monument to a different kind of conflict.

Race day in the channel. The San Pedro Rotary Open Water Swim, now in its second year, utilizes this deep-water channel for its 750-meter and 1-mile courses. The $54 registration fee supports youth scholarships and community outreach, a cause that gives the event its purpose. While the surface of the bay appears tranquil, the area’s history is scarred by the 1976 explosion of the SS Sansinena at berth 46, an event that sent shockwaves for miles and serves as a reminder of the industrial intensity of these waters. Swimmers today navigate a course that has seen much more turbulent days than the one they will face during the September race. For those looking to keep their open water season going, the calendar is packed; local swimmers often head north to tackle the Redondo Beach Swim the Avenues just one day later, or test their endurance in the longer formats offered by the MPSF Open Water Championships held in the following month. As you round the final turn, the proximity to the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium serves as a final point of reference, bringing you back to the protected sands of Cabrillo Beach.
