39th Provincetown Swim for Life & Paddler Flotilla

About the race

In 1620, the crew of the Mayflower anchored in the sheltered waters of Provincetown Harbor, marking the first European landfall in the region. Among their early observations was a whale surfacing near their vessel; in a moment of historic misjudgment, the settlers attempted to shoot the animal, failing to make contact but recording one of the earliest documented human-marine mammal interactions in these waters. Today, the relationship with this basin is far more harmonious, centered on the annual Swim for Life, a community-driven event that supports local health and environmental causes.

The Harbor Environment. As you begin your swim along the East End shoreline, you are moving through a naturally deep, protected basin. Unlike many coastal locations, this harbor has historically required no dredging to maintain its depths, which range from 30 to 90 feet, creating a stable environment for marine life. The currents here are influenced by the broader circulation of Cape Cod Bay, which typically follows a counter-clockwise flow moving north toward the tip of the peninsula. This constant movement ensures a well-mixed water column, essential for the health of the bay. While swimming, keep your eyes on the horizon; the area remains a critical habitat for the endangered North Atlantic right whale, and humpback whales frequently visit between April and December to feed on schooling fish.

Landmarks and Logistics. Throughout the course, the 252-foot Pilgrim Monument dominates the skyline. Completed in 1910, this structure is the tallest all-granite monument in the United States and serves as a constant navigational reference point for those in the water. The event itself offers three distinct distances—805 meters, 1.2 miles, and a 1-mile option in the nearby freshwater of Wellfleet’s Great Pond—catering to various experience levels. Participation requires an registration process managed by the Provincetown Community Compact, with logistics designed to respect the unique tidal dynamics of the region. The race takes place annually on the first Saturday following Labor Day, with a noon start for harbor swimmers. Each participant receives a commemorative T-shirt, and the community organizes informal gatherings along the shoreline to support the field as they navigate the shallow coastal fringe.
