About the race
Rather than facing the unruly chop of an open estuary, competitors arrive at an enclosed body of water framed entirely by lovely vegetation that wraps around the perimeter. The transformation of this former industrial excavation has produced a tranquil haven for distance swimmers. Along the shoreline, the old quarry edge softens into a sandy beach that slopes gently into the shallows, eliminating sharp drop-offs and providing an ideal transition zone for the start and finish of the race. Swimmers stepping into the water find steady footing beneath their feet before gliding out onto the calm surface.
The 19th-century mills and dams along the Río Luján
About three kilometres from the quiet basin of the lake, the regional landscape preserves the engineering history of early commerce along the Luján River. Starting in 1874, the Bancalari family operated a working grain mill along the riverbanks, relying on the steady waterway for their operations. As trade and industrial activity grew, managing and traversing the local watercourses required durable river crossings and reliable ground transport. To bridge the waterways, transport routes crossed the Luján River by means of a solid brick dam and traversed the neighbouring Arroyo Las Flores with a steel bridge. Connecting these key points was a narrow-gauge Decauville railway, which was utilized to carry heavy materials for the construction of historical buildings along the riverbanks. The light railway also served a protective civil purpose, helping haul the earth and stone needed to build an extensive flood protection embankment along the Luján River.
The sandy shoreline and enclosed grounds of Lagos del Rocío
Lagos del Rocío does not function as a public bathing resort, and swimming in its spring-fed waters is permitted exclusively during organized races and scheduled training sessions. Because casual access is restricted, competitors encounter an orderly, undisturbed lake surface free from casual bathers. On event mornings, the lakeshore provides a welcoming base for athletes and their travelling supporters. The venue grounds welcome companions of the swimmers, offering comfortable restrooms and a buffet service where supporters can gather to watch the competition unfold across the compact emerald arena.
The 1,500m and 3,000m events of Lagos del Rocío
The event takes place in March, capturing the pleasant late-summer warmth of the Argentine season. The competition is staged by Circuito Lagos de Buenos Aires, an organization that has been running open water events since 2010. Swimmers can take on two official distances over 1,500 metres and 3,000 metres, offering a fast middle-distance test alongside an extended endurance race. The main competitive distance is open to swimmers aged 16 and older on race day. Starting arrangements are determined by the organizers, who launch the race either directly from the sand beach or from standing depth in the water, often dividing participants into separate waves to prevent crowding. Swimmers must wear an individual safety buoy throughout the event, entering the water with the buoy properly secured and keeping it fitted until crossing the finish line.
Swims are conducted without wetsuits unless organizers specifically announce otherwise, and no outside pacing escorts are permitted in the water. Past circuit events held at the lake have included combined aquathlons and multi-distance swim meets ranging from 300 to 3,000 metres. In past night open-water races over 1,000 and 2,000 metres, every swimmer took home a finisher medal. The circuit has also demonstrated a rigorous safety presence during past cold-water meets, stationing more than 15 lifeguards along the course for swimmers completing races in swimsuits, wetsuits, or fins. With watchful safety teams stationed all around the perimeter, competitors can settle comfortably into their pace across the calm emerald lake.
