About the race

Legend has it that the Tupi people first named this coastal stretch 'maçayó'—that which covers the swamp—to describe the cyclic lagoons that form when sand bars choke river mouths, only to be violently breached by the high tide. This rhythmic pressure of the sea remains the defining force for any swimmer entering the waters of Pajuçara. Long before the first race buoys were set, the shoreline was a busy artery for 17th-century vessels loading timber, sugar, and tobacco, transforming the local geography into a hub of maritime commerce that still dictates the flow of the current today.

Navigating the tropical currents

The consistent trade winds that sweep across the coast act as a natural climate regulator, keeping the water temperature stable and preventing the wild fluctuations often found in more temperate seas. As you move away from the shore, the water reveals the complex ecosystem of the natural pools. You will find yourself swimming over a habitat that shelters diverse sponges and crustaceans, though the mollusks that once thrived here have become elusive following decades of industrial runoff. The entire coastal corridor, stretching south towards the Santa Isabel Biological Reserve, serves as a sanctuary for sea turtles, including the Olive Ridley. It is common to spot these creatures in the calmer stretches, provided you maintain a steady, non-intrusive pace.

Race day logistics

This annual event, organized by Ecooutdoor Sports Business, offers distances from a 500m night swim to a 4000m challenge marathon. The 33 EUR entry fee covers the logistics of securing the nautical traffic lanes and the essential kayak support, which is mandatory given the unpredictable nature of the local wind-driven currents. Participants should be prepared for a technical start. If you are looking for a different intensity in the same waters, the Copa Brasil de Águas Abertas provides a more competitive circuit exactly one week prior, whereas the Aloha Spirit remains focused on the marathon experience. Whether you choose the 1km short distance or the full 4km challenge, the race concludes at the Pajuçara beach, where the sand bars continue their ancient, shifting dance with the tide.
