About the race

On the morning of the B Pearl Bayrak Kids, the Marmaris waterfront stirs long before the first heat, as local families and swimming clubs gather under the shadow of the fortress. This annual event has become a community anchor, drawing participants who return to these waters to test their pace in a bay that has witnessed millennia of maritime activity. For those seeking a longer challenge later in the season, the TURKISH OPEN WATER SWIMMING SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIP offers a more competitive professional circuit in these same waters.

Historical waters and hidden cults

As you swim, the skyline is dominated by the Marmaris Castle, a stone sentinel that has watched over the harbour since antiquity. The bay itself bears the weight of the ancient city of Physkos; in 334 BC, its inhabitants fled to the hills to escape the approaching forces of Alexander the Great, leaving their belongings to the mercy of the flames. Today, the water remains calm, far removed from the British naval training of 1801, when 14,000 troops anchored here to prepare for their campaign in the East. Further out, the path takes you near Heaven Island, where the Nimara Cave holds secrets of the Mother Goddess Leto. Archaeologists have identified this as a site of worship dating back 12,000 years, where stone altars remain hidden from the surface. While navigating, you might spot the trogloxene butterflies that inhabit the cave’s entrance, a species identical to those found in the more distant Fethiye valleys. The coastline is equally marked by the 2,300-year-old pyramid-shaped tomb of the Greek boxer Diagoras, long mistaken by locals for a saint's grave until recent excavations revealed its true identity.

Race day and the bay's geology

The event provides distances of 800m, 4000m, and 8000m, catering to a range of experience levels. The basin is shielded from open Mediterranean swells, creating a predictable environment for long-distance efforts. As you push toward the turning buoys, you may catch sight of Sedir Island, famous for its unique, white, carbonate-based sand, a protected natural deposit. The organizers, B PEARL Open Water, manage the logistics to ensure a safe passage through these historically dense waters, allowing swimmers to focus on their rhythm against the backdrop of the Muğla coastline.
