Historical currents and navigation

As you traverse the bay, the water reveals a landscape shaped by centuries of maritime conflict and trade. The seabed serves as a repository for historical relics, including anchors and cannonballs, marking the site of the 1665 Action of Carlisle Bay, where the Dutch fleet under Admiral Michiel de Ruyter engaged English forces. This strategic anchorage was historically vital, as evidenced by the presence of the Careenage waterway, which flows into the bay and was once spanned by a primitive bridge constructed by the indigenous Taino people.

Directly from the water, you can observe landmarks that have defined this coastline for generations. At the southern terminus of the bay stands the Needham's Point Lighthouse, built in 1855 with a specialized lens that once signaled port and starboard passage to incoming vessels. Nearby, the stone structures of Charles Fort remain prominent at the headland, overlooking the marine park. Beneath the surface, the bay holds modern history as well, including the remnants of the British ship Cornwallis, which was lost to a U-Boat torpedo during the Second World War. The integration of these historical markers into the swimming route creates a setting where the physical exertion of the race occurs alongside visible remnants of the island's colonial and naval past.
