In the 17th century, Madame de Sévigné frequently arrived at the Château de Véretz, captivated by an estate she described as surpassing all others in beauty and magnificence. While the marquise admired the grounds from the safety of the riverbank, today’s swimmers encounter the same landscape from a more intimate perspective. The Challenge Daniele Gastou 2026 takes place on September 12th in the Cher river, a waterway that flows with a distinct character shaped by the geology of the Loire Valley. As you navigate the course, you will pass beneath the white tuffeau limestone cliffs that define the region’s architecture, their porous surfaces rising directly from the water's edge.
Historical currents and life below. The river is a dynamic environment, with flows that fluctuate significantly; while August averages a manageable 25.8 m3/s, historical records show the power this water can command, such as the extreme 1,000 m3/s surge seen in 1988. Beneath the surface, you are likely to swim alongside populations of pike, zander, and perch, which thrive in this second-category fishing river. The route is steeped in ancient history, mirroring the strategic importance that led to the construction of the nearby Larçay Roman castellum in the 3rd century. This fortification was built specifically to monitor river traffic and the vital road connecting Bourges to Tours. Further downstream, the presence of the Roman Fontenay aqueduct remains serves as a reminder of the engineering legacy that has flanked these waters for nearly two millennia. Organized under the guidance of the Fédération Française de Natation, the event invites participants to test their pace in a setting where the endurance of the Roman builders meets the quiet beauty that once enchanted French nobility.
