About the race
The rhythm of your stroke is punctuated by the rhythmic rise and fall of the Atlantic, a vast expanse that has witnessed centuries of maritime history. As you navigate the course, you are passing through the same waters that became a strategic focal point during the Revolutionary War, when this barrier island served as a sanctuary for soldiers seeking recovery from the conflict. Looking toward the shore, the silhouette of the Ocean Course defines the horizon; designed by Pete Dye, this legendary links layout is known globally for the 1991 Ryder Cup, a contest so intense it was dubbed the 'War on the Shore.' Your swim follows the legacy of these coastal shifts, where the currents dictate the precise line to Boardwalk 18, mirroring the unpredictable nature of the island’s history.
A landscape carved by time
This stretch of the South Carolina coast was once under the influence of figures like Captain George Raynor, a former pirate who claimed possession of the island in 1699. His transition from sea-bound plunderer to local landowner marks the start of the island’s recorded development, long before it became the resort destination seen today. Later, during the Civil War, the island’s strategic value forced a permanent occupation by Union troops stationed alongside the Charleston coastline. As you swim, you are essentially tracing the perimeter of a place that evolved from a pirate’s retreat and military outpost into a site of modern athletic endurance.
Race day logistics
The Charleston-Kiawah Open Water Swim, now in its 10th year, invites participants to choose between 805m and 2414m distances. Because the Atlantic currents here are significant, the course direction is determined on the morning of the event to ensure swimmer safety. Registration fees range from $50 to $200 depending on how early you commit, with all proceeds supporting cancer research at the Hollings Cancer Center. With over 150 participants annually, the event provides a supportive environment, including the option for 'angel swimmers' to accompany those new to open water. Whether you are navigating the swells or focusing on your pace, you are contributing to a cause that has raised over $600,000 since its inception, transforming a day of swimming into a critical engine for medical progress.
