About the race

In 1566, the Ottoman admiral Piyale Pasha led a naval expedition that left a lasting mark on the Adriatic coast. The fortifications of Vasto, including the tower of Punta Penna, were erected specifically to track and deter such incursions from the sea. Today, as you prepare for the 3^ Golfo di Vasto, the water you swim in remains a powerful connection to this maritime history, where the defensive architecture that once scanned the horizon now serves as a scenic guide for athletes. The gulf remains a place where human stories intersect with the tides, much like the life of Lanza del Vasto, the 20th-century poet and activist who carried the name of his ancestral home across the globe to advocate for nonviolence.

The coastal landscape

As you navigate the 1500m or 3000m courses, your perspective is dominated by the silhouette of the Castello Caldoresco, built in 1439 by Giacomo Caldora. The fortress sits prominently on a headland, offering a constant point of reference for swimmers approaching the shore. Further out, the Punta Penna Lighthouse commands the view as the second tallest in Italy; its current structure was rebuilt in 1948 following the destruction of the original by retreating German forces in 1944. Beneath the modern coastal road, the ancient Roman municipality of Histonium lies partially submerged and buried, a reminder that this port has served as a maritime hub for centuries. This event is part of the broader Circuito Adriatico Acque Libere, which brings together swimmers across various regional waters. The memory of the landscape also holds quieter tragedies, such as the 1816 landslide that claimed the church of Cona a Mare, now lost to the sea but preserved through the artwork relocated to the local Duomo. Nearby, the sand dunes of the Mediterranean Botanical Garden near San Salvo conserve a fragile ecosystem, while the medieval history of the Sinello River valley continues to overlook the coast.
