About the race

Killala Bay is a vast, tidal inlet where the Atlantic Ocean meets the mouth of the River Moy, creating a stretch of water shaped by deep, shifting channels and expansive sandbanks. When swimming here, you quickly learn to read the water's movement; the ebb and flow are dictated by the bay's unique topography, where the current gains momentum as it squeezes past the sandy reaches of Bartragh Island. The water here carries a distinct, deep Atlantic hue, and on a calm day, the visibility across the bay reveals the 12th-century Killala Round Tower standing as a sentinel on the southwestern horizon.

Historical markers in the water

As you navigate the course, history is never far from the surface. On the western side of the bay, the skeletal remains of Moyne Abbey rise above the shoreline; founded in the 15th century, its stone arches and fine tracery are clearly visible from the water, serving as a reminder of the friary's destruction during the 1590 Reformation. Further north, near the town centre, the 17th-century fortification of Inishcrone Castle provides a second landmark, marking the transition between the open sea and the quieter coastal waters. The area also carries the weight of more recent history, including the 1920 destruction of the local coast-guard station during the Irish War of Independence, a site that remains embedded in the local landscape.

Race day and community

The Coleman Electronics Swim, held annually on June 20th, integrates this environment into a competitive format organized by Swim Ireland. Participants receive a swimming hat as part of their entry, joining a community that honors the legacy of the local Mac Fhirbhisigh bardic clan, whose chroniclers once documented the very tides we now swim through. For those who find the sea conditions here particularly compelling, the nearby River Moy Swim held in July offers a contrasting experience, shifting from the bay's open, tidal expanse to the more contained, freshwater environment of the river just a few weeks later. Safety remains the primary focus, with the course managed to work within the specific tidal windows that define the movement of Killala Bay.
