About the race
When Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood took command of the British fleet following the death of Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar, he could scarcely have imagined his name would one day define a town on the shores of a vast, freshwater sea. Today, that connection is felt by every swimmer entering the waters of the Georgian Bay. The race begins in the shadow of the Collingwood Terminals, a massive grain elevator built in 1929 that dominates the horizon. Standing on the docks before the 1K, 3K, or 5K start, you are looking out over the same basin that once served as a primary shipping hub for the Great Lakes, a industrial legacy that remains the most visible point of navigation for anyone sighting in the water.
Navigating the basin
The swim takes place entirely within the Collingwood Harbour, a protected expanse shielded from the open lake's more unpredictable moods. Because the Georgian Bay is massive, it acts as a significant thermal regulator for the entire area, maintaining a climate that is notably distinct from inland Ontario. This thermal mass creates a stable environment for the race, held annually each July. As you stroke through the harbor, keep your gaze fixed on the shoreline near Craigleith. The rock formations there are famous for their abundance of fossils, remnants of ancient life visible even from the water's edge if you stop to sight near the perimeter. This coastline is also the final resting place of the Mary Ward, a vessel whose history is permanently archived at the local heritage depot, serving as a reminder of the maritime risks that once defined this bay.
A landscape of history
Long before shipping terminals or European explorers arrived, this shoreline was the domain of the Petun First Nations. They established a complex network of villages along the Niagara Escarpment, using the high ground to oversee the water that you will navigate during your 1K, 3K, or 5K effort. By 1650, they were displaced from the region, but their presence remains etched into the topography of the surrounding hills. When you stand on the starting line on July 5, 2026, you are tracing a path through a landscape shaped by centuries of displacement, maritime tragedy, and industrial ambition. The water here is deep and cold, a reminder of the sheer scale of the Great Lakes system, providing a challenging and grounded experience for every participant.
