About the race

Driving along the coast toward Coogee Beach, the horizon reveals the expanse of Gage Roads, that storied stretch of water where sailing history was made during the 1987 America's Cup. As you park and walk down toward the sand, the coastal air carries a sense of calm that belies the area's intense maritime past. This is the setting for the Coogee Jetty to Jetty Swim, an event hosted by the Cockburn Masters that turns these protected waters into a communal stage. You aren't just swimming; you are moving through a landscape shaped by both nature and significant human endeavour.

Beneath the surface of your swim lies the memory of the Anglesea prison hulk, a merchant vessel that ran aground in 1829 and was repurposed as a floating jail, remaining a silent witness to the colony's early, harsh years. The shoreline itself is equally dense with history. As you sight from the water, you might glimpse the path toward the Round House, the oldest building in Western Australia. Beneath this structure, a tunnel was carved out in 1830 to allow whalers direct access from the beach to the township, a subterranean feat of engineering that still marks the coastline. The entire area between Anglesea Point and Point Marquis holds deep significance as Manjaree, a traditional meeting place and ceremonial ground for the Noongar people for thousands of years.

Race day logistics

The 1500m Classic, 750m, and 250m distances are designed to make the most of Coogee's protected environment. While the summer heat can be intense, swimmers here often benefit from the 'Fremantle Doctor', the reliable afternoon sea breeze that cools the coast. The event itself is a local favorite, often drawing those who also take part in the Fremantle Ports Swim Thru or the more demanding South32 Rottnest Channel Swim, though the Coogee atmosphere remains distinctively social. Just as the historic removal of the limestone bar at the Swan River mouth once opened the port to the world, this event opens these waters to a wide range of abilities. The race is a reminder of the maritime heritage that defines Fremantle, from its time as a massive Allied submarine base during WWII to the daring 1876 Catalpa rescue of political prisoners. Whether you are aiming for a personal best in the 1500m or enjoying the shorter loops, the course offers a rare perspective on a coast that has seen everything from whaling operations at Bathers Beach to the accidental bombing of the USS Sargo.
