About the race

In 1842, explorer Bernardo Philippi navigated the dense forests of the Los Lagos region while surveying for the Chilean army and stumbled upon a vast expanse of water. Struck by the sight of snowy Andean peaks reflected in the depths, he famously compared the lake to the clarity of Lake Geneva. Today, that same water serves as the stage for the Frutillar open water challenge, where swimmers trace the legacy of the German settlers who arrived by steamship in 1856 to transform these rugged shores into the town we see today. The name of the city itself honors the wild white strawberry, or 'frutilla chilena', that still persists in the forests surrounding the basin.

From the water to the volcanoes

As you pull through the lake, the horizon offers a perspective impossible to find from the land. The course in the bay of Lake Llanquihue—a massive moraine-dammed lake of glacial origin—is framed by four imposing volcanoes: Osorno, Calbuco, Tronador, and Puntiagudo. These giants dominate the view throughout your swim, grounding the experience in the powerful geology of the Andes. Near the shoreline, your navigation is marked by the distinct wooden silhouette of the Teatro del Lago, a structure inspired by traditional Chiloé architecture and renowned for its acoustics, which stands as the southernmost international theater in the world.

Race day and logistics

The event takes place on November 15, 2026, offering distances of 500m, 1km, and 2km. Registration fees range from 24.000 to 37.000 CLP, which cover the logistical support necessary to manage the bay, including safety staff and the distribution of mandatory swimming caps and safety buoys. The schedule is tight, beginning with a mandatory technical briefing and water acclimatization at 10:45 AM, followed by staggered starts. Because the lake is vast and subject to changing conditions, this briefing is essential for understanding the safety procedures and the specific layout of the buoy course in this alpine environment.
