About the race
The Great East Skinny Dip is part of the Great British Skinny Dip, an initiative that has grown from a single event in 2016 to dozens across the country. The event aims to raise money for good causes while allowing participants to experience the exhilaration of being naked in a non-judgemental, diverse group. It promotes body positivity and mental health awareness, encouraging participants to feel comfortable in their own skin.
Since moving to Clacton-on-Sea in 2021, the event has seen significant growth, reaching 100 participants by 2023. The atmosphere is celebratory and inclusive, with participants meeting on the beach before a collective rush into the sea at the sound of a horn. It is a charity-focused event, currently supporting the mental health charity Mid and North East Essex MIND.

Where to stay
Clacton-on-Sea offers a range of traditional seaside stays, including Victorian-era guesthouses converted from former family homes, modest boutique hotels along the Marine Parade, and several caravan parks set back slightly from the coast. Expect to pay between 70 and 130 GBP per night for a double room during the September season, depending on proximity to the pier or the quieter Martello Bay area.
Things to do nearby
Beyond the water, the area invites exploration of its coastal heritage. You can walk the historic Clacton Pier for classic seaside amusements, take a short trip to the nearby Essex Wildlife Trust sites for coastal birdwatching, or explore the local museums that detail the region's unique Palaeolithic archaeological discoveries. For those interested in the post-war history of the coast, the remnants of the defensive structures and the evolving landscape of Jaywick Sands offer a somber yet fascinating look at the region’s resilience against the North Sea.
