About the race

The K2I challenge consists of two distinct open-water crossings in the Ionian Sea: a 6km swim connecting the islands of Kefalonia and Ithaca, and a 10km route originating from Atokos toward the Ithacan coast. Scheduled for August, these events are strictly non-competitive and require participants to navigate as a pod, with safety support provided by a lead vessel and accompanying ribs for each group. The entry fee of 2280 EUR covers logistics, including local boat support and professional coaching for the week, which is necessary to navigate the maritime traffic and currents inherent in this 20km long strait. Those seeking a different pacing in the same waters can look toward the Ithaca Odyssey, which offers a distinct series of coastal swims in May.

The landscape and history

Navigating these waters brings swimmers directly into contact with the geography of the Ithaca strait, a critical Mediterranean passage. As you swim, the island’s profile is dominated by the Isthmus of Aetos; this narrow 600-meter strip of land divides the territory into two mountainous halves and defines the depths of the Molos bay. The water here also holds remnants of a 19th-century maritime boom, when the port of Vathy functioned as a major shipbuilding hub, producing over 200 vessels during the British protectorate. Looking toward the shore, one passes the Lazareto islet, where the 17th-century chapel of the Transfiguration still stands; the islet’s stone structures once served as a quarantine station for arriving crews, before being repurposed by British authorities as a prison that remained standing until the 1953 earthquake.

Myth and navigation

Local tradition identifies the harbor of Vathy with the ancient port of Phorcys, the site where the Phaeacians famously left a sleeping Odysseus to conclude his long voyage. Beyond the mythology, the crossing demands practical attention to the strait’s dynamics. The passage connects the Ionian Sea from the north and south, creating complex current flows that necessitate the rigid safety protocols enforced by the Greek Coast Guard. During the crossing, participants must maintain a tight formation, as the support skippers retain the authority to extract any swimmer who exceeds the three-meter separation limit to ensure overall safety. All participants receive a commemorative crossing certificate upon completion of the event.
