About the race
In the open sea along the coastline of La Ventana, Baja California Sur in Mexico, swimmers gather for the La Ventana leg of the Baja Swim Series. Looking out from the beach, the window of open water stretches across the strait where the sea glows in shades of turquoise. Persistent coastal breezes funnel through this geographic opening, sweeping across the water and kicking up surface texture against the arid desert backdrop.
The Sea of Cortez: marine life and underwater visibility
The race plays out across the Sea of Cortez, an expanse famously described as the world's aquarium for its astonishing concentration of marine life. Deep pelagic fish and ocean megafauna converge in these waters, drawn by the rich currents circulating through the gulf. Swimming here offers an extraordinary window into the deep, with water visibility in La Ventana ranging anywhere from five meters to well over thirty meters depending on the season. Looking down through your goggles, the light pierces the blue column to reveal the sunlit world passing silently underneath. Among the creatures inhabiting these gulf waters are whale sharks, the immense and gentle ocean giants that feed near the surface and can often be observed drifting through the upper water column. Gliding over the open sea with the knowledge that such massive marine life shares these waters gives every kilometer an unmatched sense of wilderness.
The shore of La Ventana: pearl fishers and desert origins
Neolithic hunter-gatherers lived in the area of La Ventana at least ten thousand years ago, leaving behind rock paintings hidden in the nearby desert landscape. Centuries later, European expeditions ventured into these remote waters, beginning when Hernán Cortés sailed into nearby Bahía de La Paz in May 1535. The wealth hidden beneath the surface soon lured others, including Sebastián Vizcaíno, who led a pearl-fishing expedition along the western rim of the Gulf of California in 1596. In the early 1940s, a lone pearl diver named Salome Leon founded La Ventana, establishing the village that still looks out over the channel today. Stepping onto the sand before the start connects modern swimmers directly to that quiet history of freedivers who read these same swells without modern gear.
La Ventana: a wind town, a pufferfish bay and small fields
La Ventana is a small fishing town known internationally for kitesurfing and windsurfing, thanks to its ideal wind conditions from November through March. The town lies about 40 minutes southeast of La Paz. The pufferfish lives in the clear waters of La Ventana, and the Baja Swim Series presents it as a reminder that the Sea of Cortés is alive in every corner. The Baja Swim Series calls the pufferfish one of the best-loved emblems of the bay. The previous edition drew 16 swimmers in the 7 km race and 30 athletes in the 2,000 m event.
The Baja Swim Series course: out-and-back at ChiloChill
The La Ventana leg of the Baja Swim Series stands as the second stop of the regional circuit, organized by Baja Swim Series and welcoming anyone who knows how to navigate open water. Scheduled in March, the race takes competitors directly into the open sea under late-winter skies. Swimmers can choose between six distinct distances: a 500-meter dash, alongside courses measuring 1.5 kilometers, 3 kilometers, 5 kilometers, 7 kilometers, and a 10-kilometer marathon swim. The race headquarters centers on the sand between ChiloChill Glamping Resort, the La Ventana Dive Center, and Coyas Beach Bar, creating a lively hub where the desert meets the shore. From the beach, the course follows an out-and-back design that sends swimmers offshore toward an ocean turnaround buoy before looping home to the sand. Pushing through the turquoise chop toward that marker, you feel the vastness of the Sea of Cortez stretching out toward the horizon.
