About the race

The drive into Galloway shifts from rolling hills to the sudden, expansive presence of water as you approach the Galloway Activity Centre. By the time you park, the air feels sharper, drawn from the Rhinns of Kells that feed this valley. The 10km end-to-end race here is a demanding test of endurance, tracing a route where the River Dee undergoes a geographic transformation. Upon entering the water, you are swimming through a landscape shaped by the Norse-Gaelic heritage, a history of settlers who navigated these same corridors centuries ago. The water itself, known locally as the Black Water of Dee before it merges into the wider loch, carries a weight of history that matches the physical challenge of the distance.

The route and surroundings. As you progress, the shoreline reveals the Airds of Kells oak woodland, which stands as one of the largest ancient forest remnants in the valley. The presence of the Threave Castle island fortress, visible as you move through these waters, serves as a persistent reminder of the area’s strategic importance in the Middle Ages. You might notice the birdlife from the nearby Ken-Dee Marshes, an RSPB reserve that marks the transition of the riparian environment. The industrial legacy is just as present; you will pass the 18th-century Ironmacannie Mill, a structure that once relied on the power of the water you are now swimming across. Nearby, the Crossmichael Parish Church keeps watch from its knoll, and you may spot Belted Galloway cattle grazing near the banks.

Race day mechanics. This 10km event requires significant logistical support due to the scale of the course. The Galloway Activity Centre provides a high ratio of safety kayakers and powered boats, a necessity for a point-to-point swim that covers the full length of the loch. While some choose to refine their pacing during the shorter distances or the Loch Ken Night Swim held the day prior, the 10km is the primary endurance test of the weekend. Finisher rewards include a wooden medal crafted locally by Wishwood Desires. The water temperature is maintained by the constant influx of fresh stream water, keeping the conditions stable for the September start date.
