The Atlantic waters off San Bartolomé de Tirajana are defined by a marine shelf that remained dry during the last ice age, eventually submerged to create the sandy expanse that feeds the Maspalomas dunes. Swimmers navigate a coastal environment protected as a Special Area of Conservation, where the water flows over dense, lush meadows of seagrass known as sebadales, providing a habitat for local marine life.
