About the race

The waters surrounding Capo Milazzo maintain a gentle temperament in late summer, characterized by steady surface conditions that favor a consistent, rhythmic stroke. While the open sea often demands navigation of unpredictable currents, the coastal currents here are generally manageable, flowing along the rugged cliffs of the promontory. Swimmers should anticipate local wind patterns typical of the Sicilian coast, which tend to remain calm in the morning hours before occasionally freshening as the sun climbs. The water remains comfortable for the duration of the event, allowing for sustained endurance without the thermal strain found in more northerly latitudes.

Historical currents and landmarks

As you navigate the 10km point-to-point course, your path crosses the site of the Battle of Mylae in 260 BC, where the Roman Republic first deployed the corvus to secure naval dominance. The intensity of this historic engagement stands in stark contrast to the serenity of the current marine environment. Further along the route, the coastline reveals the Capo Milazzo lighthouse, a white tower perched 90 meters above sea level that has served as a navigational beacon since 1891. Near the northern tip, you will pass the natural rock formations of the Piscina di Venere, a sheltered pool of water protected by stone walls. The cliffs themselves house the sanctuary where Saint Anthony of Padua sought refuge after his 1221 shipwreck, a site still visible from the water today.

Race day dynamics

The event, organized by ASD Ulisse and ASD Baia S. Antonio, centers its logistics at the Tonnara Beach Club. The 10km challenge begins at the 'Croce di Mare', leading swimmers past submerged caves and diverse marine life, including dusky groupers and moray eels. Following the 2017 incident involving the sperm whale Siso, the local community maintains a strong focus on conservation, with the whale's skeleton now preserved in the MuMa museum to raise awareness of marine pollution. For those preferring shorter distances, the Mile race offers a triangular course within the protected waters of Baia del Tono. The event schedule and registration processes are managed to accommodate the specific tidal windows of the area, ensuring safety while maintaining the point-to-point nature of the longer distance.
