About the race

On the morning of January 26th, the shoreline at Mount Martha transforms into a hub of activity as the local Life Saving Club readies the beach for the annual MMAD Swim. This event is a cornerstone of the community, drawing families and seasoned swimmers who return each year to navigate the bay’s predictable waters. Since 1997, the club has managed the race with an emphasis on safety, deploying over 60 water personnel to ensure that everyone from the 200m youth participants to the 5km endurance athletes can focus on their rhythm.

A landscape of history

As you swim along the coast, the water offers a unique vantage point of the Mornington Peninsula, land traditionally stewarded by the Bunurong people. This stretch of coast, historically known as the Tichin-Gorourke pastoral run, was once captured by artist Georgiana McCrae in 1844, and its rugged character remains visible today. Look toward the shore and you will spot the distinct silhouette of Mount Martha House, a landmark that has served as a hotel, guest house, and even army barracks since 1889. Further along, the industrial remnants of the Fossil Beach Cement Works stand as a protected archaeological site, marking a brief period of 19th-century industrial ambition that left its mark on the local landscape.

Echoes of the exotic

The region’s history extends beyond the local colonial era into international intrigue. William Balcombe, a central figure in the peninsula's early development, held deep ties to the exiled emperor through his daughter Betsy, who befriended the leader during their time on Saint Helena. This connection brought unexpected flora to these shores; Balcombe is credited with introducing the sweet briar and weeping willow to the area, with the original cuttings reportedly taken from the trees surrounding the grave of the French leader. These imported species now frame parts of the coastal terrain you traverse during the race. For those looking to continue their season, the coastal waters host other events like the Mount Eliza Swim Classic just a few days before, or the Mornington Twilight Swim nearby. Whether you are tackling the 5km endurance challenge or joining a team in the 1.2km classic, the bay remains a reliable and storied course for all who enter.
