About the race

From 1880 to 1890, the coastal landscape between the Maroochy and Mooloolah rivers was a vital transit corridor known as Potts Point. During this decade, teams of bullocks laboured through the sandy scrub to haul timber destined for the Mooloolaba depot, marking the early industrial rhythm of this coastline. Today, the water that laps at the Mooloolaba Spit—a sheltered bay that once served this trade—is the stage for the Mooloolaba Mile, where modern swimmers trace a triangle course across the same tides that guided early regional commerce.

The swimming experience

The course remains rooted in the traditional country of the Gubbi Gubbi people, whose historical connection to the Sunshine Coast landscape continues to define the region. As you navigate the triangle, you are swimming in an arena maintained by the Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club. Established as the area transitioned into a coastal resort, the club has provided essential patrols for decades; their presence is a constant feature of the Mooloolaba surf, ensuring the safety of those pushing through the 800m, 1600m, 3000m, 4500m, or 6000m distances. The multi-lap format allows you to test your endurance while checking your progress against the beach, a practical approach for those preparing for longer ocean challenges.

Race logistics

This event is designed for accessibility and growth. If you are looking for a shorter, early-season test, you might consider the Bluff to Bar encounter. For the Mooloolaba Mile, the sheltered nature of the Spit eliminates the need for individual support boats or kayak escorts, making it a rare venue where marathon-style distances can be completed within a compact, visible circuit. Prizes are awarded at the finish line based on live times, keeping the atmosphere immediate as you emerge from the water onto the sand.
