About the race

Based along the quiet shoreline at Lighthouse Waldevi, the venue provides an expansive freshwater arena surrounded by the rolling slopes of the plateau. Staged in late November, the event caters to everything from short sprints to test-piece endurance marathons. Swimmers can select from six established courses, competing across distances of 500 meters, 1,000 meters, 2,000 meters, 3,000 meters, 5,000 meters, or the premier 10,000-meter marathon. Swimming across the wide surface in the morning light, you settle into a long, quiet rhythm in fresh water far removed from coastal tides and salt. Organized by NOWS (Nashik Open Water Swimmers), the route is laid out as a buoy-marked course across the open water.

Safety kayaks and support boats remain stationed along the circuit to guide the pack and watch over swimmers at every turn. Competitors may wear a GPS watch to monitor their splits and are permitted to tow a safety float for added visibility. In keeping with traditional open water rules, equipment such as fins, snorkels, and hand paddles are strictly prohibited, as is any form of external pacing assistance.

The Deccan Plateau and the Brahmagiri headwaters above the reservoirs

The surrounding terrain is defined by dramatic geology. Nashik rests on the high western edge of the Deccan Plateau, a vast tableland shaped by ancient volcanic formations. Just 24 kilometers away in the Trimbakeshwar Range, the peak of Brahmagiri Mountain rises above the plains. From these rocky crests springs the revered Godavari River, the largest river system anywhere in peninsular India. The Daman Ganga River drains the western flank of the Western Ghats, tumbling down toward the Arabian Sea. Downstream from the mountain headwaters near Gangawadi village, the Godavari's volume is harnessed by the Gangapur Dam. This massive earthfill structure stretches 3,902 meters in length and rises 36.59 meters above its lowest foundation to create a critical reservoir basin. Over time, heavy silt deposition carried by incoming streams began to gradually diminish the dam's storage volume. To secure the regional water supply and alleviate pressure on the reservoir, the Kashypi Dam was constructed further upstream, opening in 2000.

Trirashmi Caves and ancient ferry crossings along the Godavari trade routes

In the 1st century CE, Ushadevata, the son-in-law of the Saka ruler Nahapana, financed vital infrastructure across the territory, establishing public river ferries and roadside dharamshala rest houses to assist travelers near Nashik. Later, the Traikutaka dynasty governed the western section of Nashik district, drawing their royal name from the nearby Trikuta Hill where their inscriptions were carved into stone. In 1670, the district became a battleground when the Maratha leader Shivaji Maharaj defeated Mughal forces during the Battle of Vani Dindori.

The stone ghats of Ramkund and evening riverfront Aarti

After finishing at the lake, the journey continues along the water into urban Nashik, where the Godavari River splits the city into two nearly equal halves. At Panchavati, the riverbank transforms into a series of broad stone ghats that descend directly into the water, framed by towering temple spires. At the heart of these steps lies Ramkund, a rectangular stone bathing tank constructed in the late 17th century that serves as the holiest riverfront site in the city. Here, the Godavari takes a rare rightward turn, an unusual bend considered profoundly auspicious in Hindu tradition. The stone promenades around the ghats host a bustling open-air market filled with local life.

Vendors sit beside pyramids of fresh marigolds, incense sticks, whole coconuts, and devotional items used for water blessings. Along the adjoining paths, stalls sell traditional bronze vessels, handcrafted sandalwood-bead garlands, and small chiming metal bells. At dusk, visitors assemble along the steps of Ram Ghat to witness the evening Aarti ceremony, releasing tiny earthen lamps with flickering wicks to drift downstream on the sacred river current.
