About the race
The salt spray stings your face as you round the final turn, the rhythmic pulse of the Pacific driving you back toward the golden stretch of sand. Here at North Curl Curl, the water has a way of testing your resolve, whether you are tackling the pure 2km ocean swim or the more demanding multi-stage challenge. On 21 January 1788, Governor Arthur Phillip first explored this coastline, anchoring nearby and naming the area after the confidence he observed in the local Aboriginal population. That same spirit of resilience is what you feel when the swell picks up, forcing you to adjust your stroke to match the environment.
## The challenge
Unlike traditional open water events, the North Curl Curl SLSC hosts a unique test of versatility. The 6km event is a high-energy hybrid: you start with a 300m surf swim, transition immediately into a 2.5km run toward Freshwater Beach, complete a 200m swim, sprint 2.5km back, and finish with one last 300m swim. For those focused on a standard endurance test, the 2km triangular loop offers a consistent, well-marked course that avoids the complexity of the transitions. The event consistently takes place in early December, when the water temperature is warm enough to sustain long efforts without being oppressive. If you are looking to benchmark your progress early in the season, this event is a distinct alternative to the Cole Classic, which follows later in the summer, or the much longer Palm to Shelly 26km swim held in April. Whether you choose the sprint or the loop, the focus remains on navigating the rolling surf that defines the Northern Beaches.
