About the race

On the morning of the race, Haleiwa sheds its quiet, surf-town veneer as the North Shore Swim Series organizers gather at the water’s edge. Local swimmers, who know these currents by their seasonal temperament, mingle with visitors before the 2574-meter point-to-point journey from Chun's Reef to Waimea Bay. This stretch of coastline requires constant awareness of the reef systems, which are often sharp and cavernous, lying just beneath the surface as you navigate the blue expanse.

Historical currents and legends

As you pull through the water, you are tracing a path etched in maritime history. On February 27, 1779, Captain Charles Clerke, assuming leadership of the expedition following the death of James Cook, anchored his vessel directly at Waimea Bay. It remains the only site on Oʻahu documented as a landing point for that crew. Yet the history here is as layered as the geology; high above the finish line sits the Puʻu o Mahuka, an ancient stone temple where, in 1792, the local landscape became the site of a violent skirmish involving the crew of the HMS Daedalus. The name of the bay itself, Waimea, translates to 'reddish water,' a nod to the sediment washed down from the valley by the Anahulu Stream into the bay, a phenomenon you may notice if the inland rains have been heavy.

The legacy of the bay

Rounding the final approach, you cross into the waters that defined modern big-wave surfing. In 1957, the world’s perception of these swells shifted when, for the first time, a group of surfers paddled out to ride the massive, winter-formed waves that break off the northern point. Today, the bay is synonymous with the Eddie Aikau Invitational, a contest that remains dormant until the open-ocean swells exceed 20 feet. While the summer race date offers the calm, lake-like conditions typical of the season, the memory of those winter giants is always present in the scale of the bay. For those looking to continue their season, the North Shore 5k/10k Endurance Swim takes place just weeks later in August, offering a different test of stamina in these same island waters. Throughout the swim, the looming presence of the Puʻu o Mahuka on the ridge reminds you that this coastline has served as a sentinel for centuries.
