About the race
The Panhellenic Marathon Swimming Championship is an open water swimming race in the sea off Athens, along the coast of the Attica region in Greece. Organized by the Hellenic Swimming Federation (KOE), the regatta brings together competitors across several age categories, from junior age groups to senior men and women. Swimmers travel here to compete for national titles, measuring their conditioning against the country's elite endurance athletes. The event centers on classic marathon distances, presenting open sea courses of 5,000, 7,500, and 10,000 meters. Racing over these multi-kilometer courses demands steady pacing, navigation around turn buoys, and stamina in deep sea water. Scheduled for October, the competition marks the culmination of the open water racing season.
In past championship racing held at Vouliagmeni, swimmers took to the water under cloudy skies, persistent headwinds, and intermittent rain. Such autumn weather creates a tactical open water challenge, where competitors must battle through chop while maintaining stroke tempo and sighting lines. Swimmers staying another week can travel fifteen kilometres to compete in the XTERRA Greece O.W.S. Challenge 10K Open Water Swim, creating an ideal back-to-back marathon swimming itinerary along the Attica coast.
The Saronic Gulf: microclimate and western light along the coast
Piraeus Port records the highest average annual temperature in the metropolitan area at 20.9 °C (70 °F). Summer nights in Piraeus stay notably warm due to regular land breezes, keeping the average minimum temperature in August at 27 °C (81 °F). Piraeus Kallipoli registers the lowest average annual precipitation in the entire metropolitan area, totaling just 304 mm. Further along the Athens Riviera, the coast of Anavysos receives only 290 mm of annual rainfall, marking the lowest precipitation measurement on the entire Attica peninsula.
Poseidon's saltwater spring and the ancient sea of Salamis
The connection between the Attic shore and the sea reaches back into the earliest myths of antiquity. According to legend, the sea god Poseidon struck the earth with his trident to create a saltwater spring as his divine gift to the city of Athens. Saltwater fostered the city's maritime destiny, allowing Athens to grow into a formidable naval power that secured a decisive victory against the Persian fleet at the Battle of Salamis in 480 BC. The city withstood turbulent centuries of invasions and transformations across classical and medieval eras. The Artemision Bronze sculpture was salvaged from the seabed off Cape Artemision in northern Euboea. The statue went down with an ancient vessel that sank no earlier than the middle of the second century BC.
The Eridanos River: marsh clays and the Kerameikos banks
Today, the exposed stream bed provides a green habitat for a thriving population of Greek tortoises. In the late 1990s, excavation work for the Athens Metro unexpectedly broke into the hidden river, creating significant technical complications during subway construction. That underground engineering accidentally diverted the seasonal flow of the river away from the historic cemetery grounds.
The Athenian Riviera: seaside life from Palaio Faliro to Vouliagmeni
After completing their marathon distances, swimmers can explore the Athenian Riviera, a scenic coastal corridor stretching from Palaio Faliro all the way south to Sounio. This coastal stretch features organized lidos, open public beaches, yacht marinas, and traditional seaside fish taverns. At Palaio Faliro, a broad coastal promenade accompanied by dedicated cycling paths borders the water, creating a popular setting for a stroll or ride, although the spot is rarely chosen for open sea swimming. Right next door, Flisvos Marina offers an energetic waterfront setting where visitors can linger over espresso or cocktails in chic open-air cafes while admiring luxury yachts moored in the harbour. Further along the coast in Glyfada, the Balux House Project creates a laid-back seaside destination that merges library-style rooms with sunbeds laid directly across the beach during the summer months.
Continuing south, Vouliagmeni stands out for its upscale, theatrical charm, framed by pine-covered headlands, organized sand beaches, and high-end coastal resorts. Set just back from the coast, the Lake of Vouliagmeni presents a striking natural setting where visitors can enjoy evening drinks or coffee, occasionally accompanied by live music performances under moonlight. South of Vouliagmeni, the landscape opens up along the road toward Sounio and Varkiza, where development becomes more sparse and visitors find quiet sandy and pebbly coves that are most easily reached by car. At the Grand Resort Lagonissi, the restaurant Kohylia features an expansive wooden dining deck built directly over the water. Back in Vouliagmeni, the taverna Psaraki overlooks the cove, serving traditional Aegean fish mezedes in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere right beside the water. Sitting above the calm evening sea with local dishes on the table is the ideal way to celebrate miles logged in the open waters of Attica.
