About the race
Landscape designer Edna Walling once stood on her property at Big Hill, overlooking the sweep of the Victorian coastline before the 1967 fires claimed her home, East Point. Today, the ruins of her residence serve as a quiet landmark for those navigating the higher elevations of the Lorne region. Following the trail that descends toward the St George River, you are retracing a path that cuts through the Otway forest ranges, a landscape shaped by the river’s 14-kilometre journey from the peaks down to the Southern Ocean. The river mouth marks a transition point, where the freshwater currents meet the saltwater of the Bass Strait, an area where the water conditions are influenced by the river’s discharge and the coastal geography of Louttit Bay.
The coastal transition
As you return to the Lorne township, the route shifts from the forest canopy to the coastal edge, passing near the site where the Great Ocean Road was carved into the cliff faces by returned soldiers in the early 1920s. The segment of the run that traces the shoreline provides a vantage point over the bay, sheltered at its southern extremity by the headland of Point Grey. This is a region where history and geography intersect; the Cumberland River, located just to the south, is named after the schooner that Charles Grimes used to survey these waters in the early 19th century. Swimmers and runners often draw parallels between this event and the nearby Powercor Lorne Pier to Pub, held annually in January, which utilizes the same stretch of ocean for its swim leg.
Event logistics and participation
The Powercor Lorne Mountain to Surf, organized by the Lorne Surf Life Saving Club, features an 8km course that demands a mix of endurance and terrain management. The event, held in early January, is a primary fundraiser for the club’s local safety programs. Given the exposure to forest and coastal fire conditions, organizers occasionally manage the event under strict park closure protocols, as seen in previous years when fire ratings necessitated cancellations. Entrants receive an official T-shirt upon registration. Whether you are a frequent participant aiming to increase your 'Mountain Goat' tally or a newcomer to the Lorne trails, the event maintains a focus on the natural environment of the Great Ocean Road corridor, from the river’s mountain source to the surf at the town’s main beach.
