About the race

In 1697, Dutch mariner Willem de Vlamingh steered his ship into the mouth of a river, startled by the sight of black birds gliding across the water. He named the waterway 'Swarte Swaene-Revier', an observation that today defines the regional identity of the Perth coastline. For the modern swimmer, these black swans remain a common sight near the shoreline, drifting quietly as you prepare for the Swanny Ocean Classic, a 2km point-to-point event hosted by the Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club.

The coastline and the Noongar connection

The start line at Cottesloe Beach sits on a stretch of sand known to the local Noongar people as Mudurup. This landscape has been inhabited for at least 48,000 years, with the coastal features holding deep spiritual significance long before the current surf culture emerged. As you enter the water near the 1996-built Indiana Teahouse, you are following a path that has become a rite of passage for Western Australian swimmers. The route heads north, keeping the shore to your right, where the elevated terrain is marked by the tall Norfolk Island pines surrounding the Cottesloe Civic Centre.

Race day conditions

This 2km course is shielded by the offshore reefs of Cottesloe, which temper the force of the Indian Ocean and create a more predictable environment for the mid-summer race. The event is scheduled for January 31, 2026, a time of year when the water temperature is at its peak. Swimmers often test their training in nearby events during the preceding months; those seeking further experience in the region might look to the SWA OWS Series in Coogee held in November or the Freo Ocean Classic in January. The finish line at Swanbourne Beach is positioned directly in front of the local patrol tower, a practical marker for the end of the 2000-meter crossing. The event draws a significant local crowd, with the beach filling with club members and spectators who watch the final stretch from the sand.
