About the race
Before the area became a global destination for reality television, the Caramoan Peninsula was known to Dutch traders as Guta de Leche. These early visitors were drawn to the rugged coastline by the promise of gold mines on nearby Lahuy Island, yet the name itself originated from the curious milkdrop-shaped stalagmites that still define the coastal caves of Guta Port. Today, swimmers entering these waters are following a path first formalized in 1619, when the Spanish missionary Francisco de la Cruz Y Oropesa traversed these same virgin forests to establish the settlement of Baluarte. The peninsula’s past is deeply tied to the sea; its original moniker, 'Carahan', was a direct acknowledgment of the massive sea turtle populations that once dominated these shores.
A landscape of isolation
Swimming the Swimjunkie Challenge provides a rare perspective on the terrain that international production crews have long utilized for its raw, untouched character. Whether you are tackling the inaugural 20K ultra marathon or the shorter 2K, 5K, 10K, and 15K formats, you are navigating the transition between the Maqueda Channel and the Lagonoy Gulf. The course exposes you to the stark contrast of white and pink sand beaches set against jagged limestone cliffs. These geological features are not merely scenic; they create the secluded coves and hidden islets that protect the route from open-ocean swells. The event is scheduled for October 4, 2026, marking a decade of racing in these specific channels, with registration logistics managed to accommodate the growing interest in this remote corner of the Philippines.

Where to stay
Caramoan offers a mix of modest beach resorts and traditional guesthouses, many managed by local families who maintain the area's secluded atmosphere. For a more tailored experience, boutique lodges situated near the port provide direct access to the water. Expect to pay between $40 and $120 per night, depending on proximity to Gota Beach and the level of amenities. As the event draws closer, organizers often release additional inventory in the village to accommodate the influx of participants, so securing a space early is recommended.
Things to do nearby
Beyond the race, the peninsula is a hub for exploration. Visitors often spend their downtime island-hopping via small outrigger boats to reach hidden lagoons and sandbars that are inaccessible by foot. Kayaking and SUP are the preferred ways to inspect the caves of Guta Port up close, while the interior of the peninsula offers trekking paths through preserved forests. Local culinary traditions focus on fresh seafood, best enjoyed at informal beachside eateries, where you can sample regional dishes prepared with coconut milk and local spices.
