About the race
The horizon shifts as you find your rhythm in the middle of the channel, where the deep blue of the Pacific meets the shallower, turquoise shelves of the Leeward Islands. Looking north, the silhouette of Taha'a rises sharply from the water, acting as your steady compass point throughout the 5.5-kilometer crossing. As you stroke toward the shores of Ra'iātea, it is impossible not to think of the Portuguese navigator Pedro Fernandes de Quiros, who arrived here in 1606 and famously charted this island as 'The Fugitive'. The water temperature remains warm, reflecting the tropical climate that defines this region, though swimmers should be prepared for the seasonal humidity that arrives with the rainy period starting in November.
A landscape of history
This stretch of water carries the weight of centuries. To the southeast, the Taputapuatea Marae stands as a silent sentinel; established by 1000 CE, this site served as the political and religious anchor for all of eastern Polynesia long before European sails appeared on the horizon. The coastline of Uturoa, where the race concludes, also holds more recent, turbulent memories. Long before the 1896 raid by the forces of Queen Mamea—a violent reaction to the French annexation that left local traders dead—the area was a quiet home to figures like the adventurer Don the Beachcomber, who resided here for years. Today, The Channel Race organized by the Fédération Tahitienne de Natation offers a calmer engagement with these waters, allowing participants to choose between a solo effort or a two-person relay. The event is a key highlight of the Tahiti Swimming Dream series, typically held in mid-November, providing a rare chance to bridge the gap between two of the most significant islands in the archipelago.
