About the race

The ghost of a 17th-century soldier, weary from the relentless Sieges of Limerick, might find the modern quiet of the River Shannon difficult to fathom. Where once the city’s motto, 'urbs antiqua fuit studiisque asperrima belli', echoed through cannon fire and struggle, today’s swimmers find a different, more rhythmic intensity. As you prepare to enter the water for the Thomond Swim 2026, you are tracing a path through the very heart of the city’s defensive history. The swim begins with the silhouette of the 12th-century King John's Castle looming over the river, a reminder of the Norman engineers who reshaped the landscape.

The river's memory

Navigating the Shannon here requires a respectful nod to the natural obstacles that have challenged local mariners for centuries. You will swim past the site where traditional Gandelow and Breacaun boats once plied their trade, netting salmon in a dance of precision between the city and Plassey. The current here is influenced by the proximity of the Shannon's complex hydrology, historically obstructed by the Curraghower Falls. While these falls necessitated the construction of bypass canals long ago, their presence still dictates the character of the river flow. Keep a sharp eye out for the subtle movements of the local eel population, aided by the modern management schemes that ensure their safe passage from Lough Derg to the open sea, an ecological effort that highlights the river’s ongoing transformation.

Race day in the city

As you round the course, you will pass the Treaty Stone on its pedestal at Clancy Strand. This block of limestone remains the most tangible link to the 1691 treaty, a silent witness to the end of the Williamite War. The Thomond Swim brings this history to life, transforming a landscape defined by military conflict into a stage for endurance and community. Participants receive a swim hat as part of their entry, a small but essential piece of kit for the journey ahead. The event, organized by Swim Ireland, invites swimmers of varying abilities to experience the city from the water level, providing a unique vantage point of the historic stone bridges and the rugged riverbanks. It is an opportunity to move through the current, feeling the weight of the water against the backdrop of a city that has survived and thrived through the centuries.
