About the race

On the morning of August 30, 2026, the Arona waterfront transforms into a staging ground for the 33rd edition of the Traversata. The local Pro Loco, which has organized this gathering since 1994, coordinates the arrival of over 1,000 swimmers who converge on Piazza del Popolo. For many, this event is a recurring commitment to the water of the Lake Maggiore, where the tradition of the crossing serves as an annual ritual for local athletes and visitors alike.

The historical waters

As you swim, the landscape is defined by the strategic rivalry between two landmarks. The Rocca Borromea di Angera stands firm on the Lombard shore, a medieval fortress that mirrors the position of the Arona stronghold. These waters carry the weight of 1263, when the Torriani and Visconti fleets clashed in a naval siege, and 1636, when French and Spanish forces fought skirmishes that saw cannon-fire echo across the gulf. Beneath the surface, the history is geological and archaeological. Near the Isolino Partegora—the site of Saint Arialdo’s 1066 martyrdom—lies the 'Sass Margunin', a submerged erratic block. Further along the shoreline, the presence of prehistoric pile dwellings reminds participants that these banks have been inhabited since the 18th century BC.

Race day logistics

The competition schedule is designed to manage the lake's traffic and tidal-like currents. The 5,000m Mezzofondo on Saturday begins in Meina at 16:00, requiring a mandatory combined registration with the Sunday 2,400m Mezzofondo Sprint. Sunday morning is dedicated to the 2,400m circuit (10:30 start) and the 1,200m non-competitive crossing from Angera to Arona (11:30 start). These specific times are set to maintain clear navigation lanes. The 5,000m race offers cash prizes of 300, 200, and 100 euros for the top three, reflecting the competitive nature of the longer distance. For those seeking a different challenge, The Dragon's Challenge takes place earlier in the season, while others may opt for the Grand Prix CusioCup in June to prepare for the August currents. The event operates under the Legambiente EcoActions certification, which monitors waste management and carbon reduction during the weekend.
