About the race
In 2015, a small group of swimmers began meeting informally at Playa de Levante to train together in the open sea. What started as an spontaneous gathering of 40 to 50 local enthusiasts evolved by 2017 into the inaugural edition of the Travesía Heartbreak, an event now managed by Club Deportivo Finisher. Under the guidance of figures like Fabián, whose active presence as an announcer and organizer defines the atmosphere, the race has grown into a significant regional event. It now hosts up to 400 participants annually, blending competitive spirit with a community-focused approach to open-water swimming.
The coastal landscape
As you navigate the bay, your orientation is anchored by the presence of Benidorm Island. Located 2.5 miles offshore, this triangular, uninhabited rock mass serves as a constant visual reference for the course. Closer to the shore, the route passes near the Punta del Canfali promontory, where the Balcón del Mediterráneo occupies the site of a 14th-century fortress once tasked with defending the coast from maritime incursions. Beneath the surface, the seabed near the Teso de la Cala reveals the remains of a Roman settlement, marking the area as a historic commercial waypoint from the 3rd to the 1st century BC. These landmarks provide a tangible connection to the region's history, from the ancient trade routes to the era of the 15th-century Barbary pirate raids that once terrorized these shores.
Race day logistics
Scheduled for July 13, 2025, the race leverages the sheltered geography of the bay, protected by the Sierra Helada massif. While the skyline is dominated by modern structures like the 202-meter Intempo building—a contrast to the 16th-century watchtower at Torre de les Caletes—the event maintains a focus on participant safety, supported by a dedicated crew of kayakers and water-safety teams. Those looking for a different rhythm in the same waters can find the Travesía Popular a Nado held in late August, or for a nearby challenge, the Travesía Peñón Ifach in Calpe. The event is intentionally organized to foster a sense of shared experience, emphasizing the camaraderie of the swim over pure competition.
