About the race
In the sheltered waters of Baía de Zimbros, the open sea transforms into a placid, emerald basin tucked beneath the steep Atlantic Forest ridges of Bombinhas. Here, along the coastline of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil, the Volta da Tainha invites swimmers into a calm marine haven far removed from turbulent offshore breakers. Organized by Correr e Nadar, this open water swimming race sets off directly from the sands of Praia de Zimbros for a dedicated long-distance challenge across the bay.
The 5,000-metre course along the Zimbros coastline
Held in April, the event brings together endurance swimmers for a single, focused 5,000-metre course that tests pacing and rhythm in open water. Swimmers line up on the shore prepared for a sustained swim in the sea, where neoprene wetsuits are permitted under the rules. Now in its second edition, the competition offers a rare chance to take on a pure 5k distance within waters so remarkably still they feel almost like an endless outdoor pool. Setting out into the clear bay, the morning air carries the hushed focus of the pack as everyone settles into their stroke. The race trajectory stretches parallel to the shoreline, tracing the dramatic contours of the headland edge.
Swimmers navigate a distinctive corridor flanked on one side by floating shellfish mariculture farms and on the other by a towering mountain rock wall that plunges straight into the water. Sighting against the granite bluff provides a steady visual bearing, while the course guides the field around a small coastal island located near the shoreline trail. Slicing past the hanging aquaculture lines and out around the rocky outcrop, the calm surface lets you hold a continuous cadence with minimal chop to break your stride.
Praia da Tainha and the seasonal mullet tradition
The race takes its name from the tainha, or striped mullet, an iconic migratory species that travels through the coastal waters of Bombinhas during its annual reproductive run. For generations, the arrival of these fish along nearby beaches such as Praia da Tainha has defined the maritime heritage and rhythm of the local fishing hamlets. Looking out across the cove, one swims through waters steeped in this generational bond between the community and the seasonal passage of marine life. That human connection to the sea reaches back centuries to the arrival of Azorean colonizers who settled this protected shoreline.
Costeira de Zimbros: Atlantic Forest and pristine coves
The peninsula of Bombinhas encompasses 39 distinct beaches, ranging from bustling, wave-swept shores and exposed headlands to sheltered coves accessible only by narrow footpaths or boat. The Municipal Natural Park of Zimbros Coast is an expansive municipal conservation reserve that protects ten isolated beaches along with dense tracts of Atlantic Forest and thriving mangrove ecosystems. Swimming beneath the steep emerald ridges, the unbroken canopy of native jungle rises directly above the sea, framing the course in wild, verdant isolation. This rugged stretch of coastline is renowned for its environmental preservation, with several peninsular beaches such as Mariscal, Quatro Ilhas, Conceição, Prainha do Mariscal, and Tainha earning international Blue Flag certification for their pristine ecological standards. Along the sandy margin of Zimbros grows native creeping restinga vegetation. Overhead, the spreading branches of mature jamelão trees cast broad patches of shade, creating a tranquil botanical buffer between the village and the sea.
The artisanal pier and seafood tables of Praia de Zimbros
Back on the shoreline of Praia de Zimbros, the setting maintains an authentic, bucolic fishing village atmosphere that sets it apart from busier resort hubs. The soft white monazitic sands meet tranquil, transparent waters that resemble a natural swimming pool, offering an ideal refuge to wade and stretch tight muscles after 5,000 metres of racing. The bay's waters are just as celebrated for their bounty as they are for swimming, operating as an active cradle for local aquaculture. The surrounding seafood tables highlight freshly harvested shellfish, including plump oysters and mussels grown directly in the marine farms that swimmers skirt during the race, alongside octopus and fresh coastal shrimp. Sitting at an open-air table beside the quiet pier with a plate of fresh mussels, looking back across the flat water, offers the perfect conclusion to a long morning swimming the waters of Bombinhas.
