About the race

For centuries, the northern shores of Lake Issyk-Kul have served as a silent witness to shifting civilizations, with archaeological remnants tracing human presence back to the second millennium BC. Among the most striking markers are the ancient stone circles and traditional Turkic balbals that dot the landscape, standing as weathered sentinels near the water’s edge. Today, swimmers entering these high-altitude waters navigate a geography shaped by the massive Tian Shan alpine ranges, which dominate the horizon and provide a stark, high-contrast backdrop to every stroke.

Navigating the high-altitude shoreline

As you move through the water, the historical complexity of the region becomes part of the scenery. Near Cholpon-Ata, the shoreline hides an expansive open-air museum containing approximately 2,000 petroglyphs, some dating as far back as 800 BC, which scholars believe were once part of an ancient temple complex. The view from the water also captures more recent, man-made relics; the crumbling landing strip of the abandoned Cholpon-Ata airport famously terminates directly into this site of ancient carvings. Further along the coast, the structures of the Rukh Ordo cultural complex rise from the beach, serving as a distinct landmark that helps swimmers orient themselves during the event.

Swimming here requires acknowledging the specific conditions of the world’s second-largest high-altitude lake. Located at approximately 1,600 meters above sea level, the sheer scale of the basin creates an environment where sunlight and mountain air define the rhythm of the race. The event, organized by X-WATERS, offers a range of distances including 500m, 1609m, and 5000m, each designed to highlight the intersection of the lake’s vast, clear expanse and the rugged terrestrial heritage of the northern coast. While the environment is expansive, the start logistics are precisely managed: the 5000m event, for instance, utilizes a boat-based mass start that transports athletes to an open-water point before they head toward the finish arch at the Kapriz Recreation Center beach.
