About the race
The Eastern Bosphorus strait acts as a dynamic corridor between the mainland and Russky Island, characterized by depths reaching 50 meters and a narrow bottleneck of just 800 meters. Swimming here requires an awareness of the moving water mass, as the strait connects the Amur and Ussuri bays; while the channel is generally comfortable, the currents can shift throughout the day, demanding focus to maintain an efficient line during your stroke. The sea environment is rich and historically significant: the very name Vladivostok was once Haishenwai, or 'sea cucumber bay', reflecting a time when these organisms were far more abundant. As you navigate the point-to-point courses, the landscape from the water is defined by the Russky Bridge, a massive 2012 cable-stayed structure with towers rising 324 meters into the skyline, and the historic Novosiltsevskaya Battery, a 19th-century fortification perched at an elevation of 45.8 meters on the island's tip.
Race day and surroundings
This annual event, organized by X-WATERS, offers a variety of distances ranging from a 50m children’s race to the 10km challenge around Skryplev Island, with a 4700m course that passes directly beneath the towering bridge spans. Registration fees typically range from 3,990 to 14,990 RUB depending on the chosen distance, and every participant receives a swim cap, a rental timing chip, a rental safety buoy, and a souvenir sticker pack. The water experience is steeped in local maritime lore, occasionally reminiscent of the era when Korean haenyeo divers were active in these coastal regions. Keep an eye out for the rugged shoreline, where locations like Tigrovy Cape remind locals of a time when the surrounding wilderness was home to tigers that would occasionally venture toward the city streets. Whether you are aiming for the 1,200m 'Russian Verst' or the full crossing, the swim concludes near the campus of the Far Eastern Federal University, placing you in a well-developed area of the city after your exit from the sea.
