About the race

The current pulls with a relentless, heavy force, pushing you downstream toward the confluence where the vast Amur meets the Ussuri. As you swim, the water feels thick, carrying the sediment of thousands of kilometers through the Far East. You are tracing a path that long ago saw the desperate struggle of Cossacks during the 1652 defense of Fort Achansk, where the ice-breaking river served as both a barrier and a final exit for the outnumbered defenders. Beneath your stroke, the river hides the bitterling, a small, resilient fish that relies on the river’s freshwater bivalves to protect its young, mirroring the hidden life within these silt-laden depths.

Race day at the Amur

This is the reality of the X-WATERS Amur, an annual event that challenges swimmers with distances from 500 meters to a demanding 68-kilometer ultra-marathon. The ultra-distance race begins in Fuyuan, China, requiring logistical precision to manage the border crossing and support, which is reflected in the premium entry fee of up to 1,599 EUR. For those tackling the shorter loops around the Laguna Yacht Club or the 5-kilometer point-to-point race, the finish line is anchored by the Dormition Cathedral. This landmark, reconstructed in the early 2000s, stands on the site of the original 1890s structure, which held the marble tomb of Baron Andrei von Korff before the turbulence of the 20th century erased it. As you approach the embankment, the massive Khabarovsk Bridge looms in the distance. Completed in 1916, this engineering feat ended the need for the dangerous winter practice of laying tracks directly across the frozen river surface. Every participant receives a personalized t-shirt, a small token for completing a journey through one of the world's most storied and powerful waterways.
