About the race
Martin Strel, a local icon of long-distance swimming and a multiple Guinness World Record holder, has dedicated his career to the cause of clean waters. His spirit of endurance finds a perfect, albeit serene, reflection in the waters of Lake Bled, where participants gather annually to challenge themselves in a landscape steeped in antiquity. As you stand at the Olympic Rowing Center, ready to begin your swim, you are effectively entering a site that has commanded human awe for millennia. Long before the modern starting signals, the lakeshore served as a center for a Bronze Age cult, where archaeologists unearthed gold appliqués from the 13th-12th century BC, likely used to track the cycles of the sun and moon.
A swim through history
Navigating the course, you are surrounded by markers of a timeline that spans from prehistory to the Middle Ages. The 1609m mile distance takes you directly around the island, home to the Church of the Assumption of Mary. As you stroke through the glacial water, you might glimpse the Baroque stairway of 99 stone steps leading up to the church, a site where local tradition sees grooms carrying their brides to reach the 'wishing bell'. High above the water, the Bled Castle—commissioned in 1004 by Emperor Henry II—looms from a 139-meter precipice, serving as a constant, silent spectator to your progress. The water itself, shaped by complex tectonic and glacial forces, reaches depths of 29.5 meters and transitions from the crispness typical of its alpine origins to the more tempered conditions observed in early September.
Race day logistics
Logistics are designed to highlight the lake's unique geography. The 10,000m event, comprised of two full 5km loops, offers a sustained test of endurance, while shorter distances including 500m, 1000m relays, and the mile cater to diverse skill levels. The tradition of the 'pletna'—flat-bottomed wooden boats piloted by local families since 1740—remains a fixture on these waters, though on race day, the course is managed to ensure swimmers maintain their path safely. Entry fees vary depending on the chosen distance and registration timing, with the package typically including a timing chip and event medal. Whether you are navigating the single 5km loop or the double-lap 10km challenge, the constant presence of the surrounding Julian Alps provides a backdrop that has fascinated visitors for centuries.
