XIV Travessia Rio Tua — Mirandela

About the race

The riverbed here is wide and slow, the current muted by the geographical basin of the Tua River. As you lift your head for a breath, the horizon is dominated not by jagged peaks, but by the rolling slopes of the Terra Quente Transmontana, where olive groves stretch right down to the water’s edge. This microclimate is famously stifling, trapping the heat of the Portuguese interior; by the time you reach the midpoint of your distance, the water provides the only relief from the intense atmospheric pressure of the valley. This is the setting for the XIV Travessia Rio Tua 2026, an event that forces a physical connection between the modern athlete and a waterway shaped by the confluence of the Tuela and Rabaçal rivers, which merge only four kilometers upstream from this start line.

Historical currents and ruins. Swimming downstream, you are effectively tracing the same path that sustained human life since the 4th millennium BC. The river banks here hide traces of the ancient Caladunum, a Roman civitas where excavators have recovered copper coins minted during the reign of Tiberius. While the modern urban sprawl of Mirandela has softened the riverbanks, the medieval history remains physically present: near the exit points, you can spot the Santo António Gate, the last standing fragment of the old Castle of Mirandela. It looms about five meters high, its stone structure still showing the deep grooves where the iron hinges of the fortress doors once turned. This stretch of the river has seen significant shifts, including the 20th-century development of the Cachão Agroindustrial Complex downstream, which historically altered the water quality of the river, leaving a legacy of industrial change that contrasts sharply with the prehistoric megaliths scattered in the hills above the valley. Swimmers competing in the 3000m distance will experience the full transition from the open, sun-baked reaches of the river to the more contained, historic urban corridor that defines the race route.
