About the race

The 4th of July Swim is more than just a race; it is a celebration of community, endurance, and the pure joy of the ocean along the iconic Southern California coastline. Born from the camaraderie of the local North County Swim Group—a tight-knit community of athletes who gather weekly at Moonlight Beach, Fletcher's Cove, and Del Mar—this event captures the spirit of open water swimming in one of the most beautiful settings in the United States.

Inspired by the legendary feats of marathon swimmers like Lynne Cox, whose tales of resilience and cold-water grit resonate deeply with this group, the swim is designed to foster a sense of shared accomplishment. It is a grassroots event that prioritizes the spirit of the sport, inviting swimmers of various levels to challenge themselves in the Pacific. Whether you are a local enthusiast or a visitor drawn to the allure of the California surf, this event offers a unique chance to experience the North County coastline from the water, ending in a festive gathering at Fletcher's Cove that embodies the friendly, laid-back atmosphere of Solana Beach and Encinitas.

The event’s origins are rooted in the genuine passion of the North County Swim Group, a collective that has been training together for years, fostering an environment where both endurance and friendship thrive. The race is perfect for those who appreciate a supportive, non-commercial vibe where the focus remains on the water and the community.
