About the race
The Desafio Sauce is more than just a swim; it is a pilgrimage to the heart of Maldonado’s natural splendor. Set against the serene backdrop of Laguna del Sauce, the largest freshwater body in the region, this event offers a unique opportunity to swim in one of Uruguay’s most iconic landscapes. Unlike the turbulent Atlantic currents that characterize the nearby coastline, the Laguna del Sauce provides a tranquil, glassy surface that creates a meditative atmosphere for open water enthusiasts. The lake is surrounded by rolling hills and lush vegetation, creating a sanctuary where the silence of the water is broken only by the rhythmic stroke of swimmers.
Organized by the Liga Nacional de Natación Master, the event has become a cornerstone of the Uruguayan swimming calendar, drawing a diverse crowd of competitive master athletes and dedicated hobbyists alike. The spirit of the Desafio Sauce is deeply rooted in local tradition, celebrating the vibrant swimming community that thrives in the Maldonado department. Whether you are a seasoned competitor tackling the 4000m distance or a newcomer testing your limits in the 1200m, the event is designed to be inclusive, fostering an environment where camaraderie takes center stage. The calm, freshwater conditions make it an ideal setting for those looking to transition from pool swimming to the challenges of open water in a safe and controlled environment.
Beyond the race, the Laguna del Sauce area is a treasure trove for nature lovers. The crystalline waters and the surrounding hills offer a breathtaking panorama that feels worlds away from the bustling tourist hubs. After you have dried off and collected your medal, we highly recommend that you {{link:experiences|explore the surrounding countryside}}, where you can immerse yourself in the local ecosystem or simply unwind by the water's edge.
