About the race

The Faros Open Marathon is far more than a sporting event; it is a legendary pilgrimage for open-water enthusiasts, set against the timeless backdrop of Stari Grad on the island of Hvar. Founded in 1976 by visionary local Vicko Šoljan, the race has evolved from a modest provincial competition into an internationally revered institution. Its prestige is so profound that in 2012, it became the first Croatian sports event to be inducted into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame, cementing its status as a bucket-list destination for swimmers worldwide.

Stari Grad, one of the oldest towns in Europe, offers an atmosphere of ancient charm that perfectly complements the spirit of the race. The bay itself, known locally as Starogrojčica, provides a stunning, crystal-clear aquatic arena that has challenged some of the greatest long-distance swimmers in history, starting with the legendary Veljko Rogošić. The water quality, typical of the Adriatic, is exceptional, offering a pristine environment for athletes to test their endurance.

The event is deeply rooted in the local culture, celebrated with a warmth that makes international participants feel like part of the community. It is a fantastic choice for families and swimmers of all levels, featuring multiple distances and a dedicated kids' race that fosters a love for the sport in the next generation. Beyond the physical challenge, the Faros Marathon is a celebration of friendship and summer joy. After the race, the atmosphere shifts to a festive, unforgettable after-swim party where swimmers, locals, and spectators gather to share stories over a traditional lunch.

Whether you are a competitive athlete aiming to follow in the wake of icons or a recreational swimmer looking to soak up the Mediterranean magic, this event offers an unparalleled experience. Once you have enjoyed the thrill of the water, there is so much more to discover; you will find that after the competition, it is truly worth your time to {{link:experiences|explore the surrounding area}}, where history and natural beauty collide.
