About the race
On September 13, 1905, the Fetsund Battery was fully mobilized to defend the critical river crossing of the Glomma. While the cannons remained silent, the fortification underscores the strategic importance of this narrow strait, which served as a vital link on the ancient kings' road between Oslo and Sweden for centuries before the first bridge was constructed in 1862. Today, the water at Fetsund offers a different form of engagement: the GlommaDyppen, a marathon-distance swimming challenge that traverses the powerful currents of Norway's longest river. Swimmers navigate a path through the Glomma river delta, an expansive inland river system that defines the landscape of the Viken region. As you push through the water, the remnants of the 1862 railway bridge—once the longest of its kind in Norway at 440 meters—serve as a constant reminder of the area’s industrial and transport history. The event is deeply rooted in this environment, often challenging participants with fluctuating water temperatures that can shift from a manageable 17–18°C to a bracing 10°C in just a matter of days due to the river’s dynamic nature.
Race day and the river environment. Scheduled for August 1, 2026, the race offers distances of 2km, 6km, and 11km. The course is marked by the presence of a 7-meter high millennium stone, which stands as a silent observer to the river's history, featuring precise etchings that record the highest flood levels reached by the Glomma over the years. Participants may notice the transition from the river’s main flow into the wider, calmer reaches of Lake Øyeren, forming the largest inland delta in Northern Europe. The organization of the swim relies on strict logistics to manage the river’s flow, ensuring safety across the varied distances. Beyond the physical challenge, the event maintains a strong international profile as part of the Marathon River Swim Series, connecting the Glomma to similar river-based endurance tests in France and Spain. Whether you are aiming for the full 11km or a shorter distance, the experience is defined by the raw, shifting character of the Glomma itself, an ancient waterway that has shaped the history of the surrounding settlements from the Iron Age burial mounds at Riddersand to the present day.
