About the race

At Clifton 4th Beach, midsummer warmth on the sand gives way to crystalline Atlantic waters that can plunge well below twelve degrees Celsius within a few strokes of the shore. This is the setting for 1SOMS, or the 1st Sunday of Month Swim, an open water sea swimming event held at Clifton 4th Beach in Cape Town, along the Western Cape coast of South Africa. The gathering originated on New Year's Day in 2005 from informal swims organised by local volunteer lifesavers, eventually evolving into an established regular challenge put together by The 36ONE Openwater Swim Series. Swimmers assemble along the sands of Clifton 4th Beach, a cove naturally sheltered from the howling southeasterly gales that sweep across the peninsula during the summer months.

Stepping into the surf, the initial shock can catch the breath, as water temperatures in past editions have registered as cold as 9.7 degrees Celsius. That intense bite creates initial anxiety and demands fierce mental composure from the very first stroke. Swimmers have noted the challenge of putting their face down for more than two consecutive strokes during those initial freezing minutes in the bay. Rounding the perimeter of the course, swimming parallel to the ocean swell and then taking the waves squarely from behind helps propel swimmers back onto the sand. Emerging from the surf, the body tingles with an icy rush, shivering for half an hour as circulation slowly returns, sealing an authentic Cape Town rite of passage.

The Cape Peninsula waters: upwelling and ancient sandstone geology

Near Cape Point, the convergence of two major oceanic water masses creates an exceptionally diverse marine ecology. The two coasts behave quite differently, with the Atlantic Seaboard experiencing significantly colder sea temperatures than False Bay. The Atlantic waters off Clifton hover between 12 and 16 degrees Celsius. Strong prevailing southeasterly winds push the sun-warmed surface water away from the coast, triggering an upwelling of deep, frigid water that can plummet the temperature below 10 degrees.

Table Mountain Marine Protected Area: penguins and the Twelve Apostles

Along the coastal edges of the national park, diverse wildlife flourishes in and out of the water. At Boulders Beach, on the False Bay side of the peninsula near Simon's Town, a thriving colony of African penguins populates the sheltered granite coves. Beneath the surface of this marine sanctuary lie centuries of seafaring history preserved in the cold ocean.

Table Bay maritime history: Portuguese explorers and the coastal castle

In 1495, Vasco da Gama sailed past and named the coast Terra de Fume after noticing thick smoke rising from fires lit by indigenous communities. In 1503, António de Saldanha anchored nearby and made the first recorded ascent of Table Mountain via Platteklip Gorge, about three kilometres from the beach. Hostilities were never far away; in 1510, the Portuguese admiral Francisco de Almeida and sixty-four men were killed at the mouth of the Salt River by the Goringhaiqua, who deployed trained cattle in battle. In 1652, the Dutch established a permanent replenishment station on the shore below the mountains to supply merchant vessels navigating the dangerous route around the Cape.

About six kilometres from the swim course stands the Castle of Good Hope, an early stone fortress originally constructed directly upon the Table Bay shoreline. Its original entrance was oriented seaward until replaced in 1682, welcoming sailors stepping ashore before land reclamation later moved the coastline seaward. When the southeasterly wind drapes its famous white tablecloth of cloud over Table Mountain, open water swimmers below know the cold upwelling will keep the Atlantic crisp and invigorating.

The Atlantic shoreline: Glen Beach surf and historic Graaff's Pool

Just down the coast lies Glen Beach, positioned immediately north of Camps Bay Beach. A prominent rock outcrop naturally separates the two strands, though heavy summer sand deposits frequently cause the beaches to merge into an unbroken stretch of white shore. In winter, powerful storms strip these sandbanks away, maintaining the shifting, dynamic character of the Atlantic coastline and providing famous beach-break surfing waves. Further along the coast sits Graaff's Pool, a seaside landmark constructed in 1910 by Pieter Marais. Donated to the city of Cape Town by Jacobus Arnoldus Graaff, Graaff's Pool historically served as a dedicated sanctuary for nude sea swimming among men. These tidal baths and open bays embody Cape Town's deep, resilient love for sea bathing, passed down across generations of ocean enthusiasts. Whether slipping into a tidal pool or diving into Clifton 4th Beach for the 800-metre circuits of 1SOMS, swimmers are rewarded with some of the purest, most invigorating ocean swimming on the planet.
