About the race
In mid-November, when much of Europe pulls on winter wool, the sea still holds an inviting, late-summer warmth. The Cyprus Swim Series Pissouri is an open water swimming race held in the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea at Pissouri, in the Limassol district of southwestern Cyprus. Swimmers gather on the shores of Pissouri Beach for a multi-day late-season festival across several distances, soaking in an electric coastal atmosphere supported by smooth organization. The centerpiece of the weekend is the marathon 8-kilometre route, an expansive journey that sets off from Prolimnos Beach and charts a direct course along the rugged coast back to Pissouri. Swimmers on this longest route tackle the open Mediterranean swell, keeping their pace steady over long stretches of azure water.
For those teaming up in the 8-kilometre relay, the race introduces high-energy handoffs: teammates exchange high-fives at the safety boats positioned offshore at the two, four, and six-kilometre marks before diving into the deep water to take their turn. Both the 3-kilometre and 5-kilometre events feature a land start where competitors line up on the sand and must wait for the horn signal before plunging into the surf, avoiding costly time penalties. Closer to shore, protected waters host a 1.25-kilometre race designed for junior swimmers aged thirteen to seventeen, while eight- to twelve-year-olds can take on a dedicated 500-metre dash inside the sheltered bay. Underage participants enter with parent or guardian consent, making the shoreline a shared aquatic meeting point before the winter sets in.
Episkopi Bay: Cape Aspro and the Troodos mountain streams
Episkopi Bay is a wide marine basin nestled in the Limassol district of southwestern Cyprus. Framing this expansive stretch of Mediterranean coast are two prominent headlands, with Cape Aspro flanking the bay to the south and Cape Zevgari guarding the eastern horizon. Swimming here means cutting through sapphire waters, offering clear sightlines and an open sea horizon. The marine environment of Episkopi Bay is naturally fertile and considered highly productive for fishing. Three rivers—the Kouris, the Avdimou, and the Paramali—channel mountain rainfall down to the coast and flow straight into the bay.
Petra tou Romiou: Aphrodite's foam and ancient sea legends
The legendary sea stacks of Petra tou Romiou jut sharply out of the surf off Kouklia. Classical mythology recorded in Hesiod's Theogony relates that sea foam created after the mutilation of Uranus gave birth to Aphrodite, who emerged from the foaming surf. Local lore even identifies the iconic sea stack with the lower body of Uranus, cast into the water following the attack by Cronus, creating a seascape intertwined with Greek creation myths. The modern name Petra tou Romiou, meaning "Rock of the Roman", recalls the legendary hero Basil, who according to tradition hurled a massive boulder straight from the Troodos Mountains to shatter an invading fleet of Saracen raiders.
Further along the headland, the nearby beach of Achni takes its name from ancient legends of returning Achaean warriors who landed on the gravel shores following the Trojan War. Around thirteen kilometres west of the race area, the village of Kouklia occupies the ground of ancient Palaepaphos, celebrated as the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite. From roughly 1200 BC, the city's Sanctuary of Aphrodite Paphia flourished as a major religious center renowned across Cyprus and the wider Mediterranean. The site drew pilgrims from across antiquity until Nicocles, the final king of Palaepaphos, transferred his capital westward to Nea Paphos in the late fourth century BC.
The 1222 paleotsunami and the medieval coast
The dynamic shoreline of southwestern Cyprus was also forged by dramatic geological shifts, including a violent undersea earthquake in 1222 centered just ten kilometres from the race area. During that historic event, the sea retreated from Paphos harbour before returning as a devastating wave train, drying out the basin and rendering the medieval port unusable.
The surge leveled coastal strongholds, destroying the Byzantine Paphos Castle and reducing the fortress of Saranta Kolones to ruins that were never rebuilt. Yet coastal life persisted; centuries earlier in the seventh century, local legend tells that three hundred Alamanoi saints landed on the shores of Pissouri on a pitch-dark night.
Pissouri Bay: pebble beaches, cliffs, and fresh catch
The main village of Pissouri perches three kilometres inland, while down on the shore, the bay forms an intimate coastal haven nestled between rugged white headlands. The smooth pebble beach of Pissouri Bay is a Blue Flag shore. Right along the waterfront stands the Columbia Beach Resort, which has welcomed travelers to the bay for over three decades. After exiting the sea, competitors can relax by the resort's 80-metre lagoon-style infinity pool, which flows gently toward the spa facilities just off the beach. Beyond the swim course, the bay invites leisurely afternoon exploration on the water. Guests can rent water sports gear or board rigid inflatable boats. These agile craft are engineered with rigid hulls and pressurized air tubes for stability and high speed. Back on the gravel shore, the beachside restaurant serves fresh fish hauled directly from local waters, bringing the day to a close with Mediterranean flavors by the tranquil sea.
