About the race

In early November, when most European waters have cooled into winter, the sea off southeastern Cyprus remains remarkably warm and luminous. OceanMan Ayia Napa is an open-water swimming race held in the Mediterranean Sea at Ayia Napa Marina, in the district of Famagusta, Cyprus. The international circuit was created in 2015 by passionate open-water swimmers who wanted to share their love of endurance swimming across the globe, and its Cypriot stop makes full use of the island's extended autumn season. The event is based within the modern Ayia Napa Marina, a facility that holds an ISO-13687-1 certification for marine environmental protection. Starting from this eco-conscious harbor basin gives participants direct access to open Mediterranean waters that are celebrated for being crystal-clear and genuinely warm even late in the year.

Swimmers glide out into a vibrant turquoise expanse. The event program covers a broad spectrum of challenges, offering races over 500 meters, 1,500 meters, 2,000 meters, 5,000 meters, and a 10,000-meter marathon distance. In past editions, the starting lines have brought together hundreds of international participants representing dozens of countries and multiple continents to race side by side. A memorable hallmark of these gatherings has been the participation of para-swimmers tackling the demanding 5-kilometer course, accompanied stroke for stroke through the waves by reserve frogmen.

Cape Greco: sea caves and Aphrodite's headland

Cape Greco is a commanding promontory known in antiquity as Cape Pedalion. According to the ancient geographer Strabo, a prominent hill rising above this eastern cape was once crowned by a sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite. Today, the headland is preserved as an untouched national park and a designated Natura 2000 protected area, safeguarding both its geological marvels and its marine wilderness. Beneath its sheer cliffs, the natural limestone has been carved by wave action into sweeping sea caves known locally as the fairy caves or stone palaces. Coastal folklore fancifully identifies these deep, luminous caverns as the lair of the legendary Ayia Napa sea monster, though swimmers will find nothing more menacing beneath the surface than gentle fish and extraordinary clarity.

Above the waterline, Cape Greco functions as a vital ecological corridor, designated as an Important Bird Area because it forms a key migration bottleneck for migrating raptors. The surrounding scrub and coastal steppe also shelter resident breeding species, including the endemic Cyprus warbler, the Cyprus wheatear, and the black francolin.

From Pernera to Makronissos: underwater art and coastal tombs

Off Pernera Beach, swimmers and freedivers can explore the Museum of Underwater Sculptures Ayia Napa, resting on the seabed at depths between 8 and 10 meters. This submerged art installation features crystal-clear waters. The rocky coastal fringe holds the Makronissos archaeological site. Here, steps cut into coastal stone lead past ancient rock-hewn tombs, the remains of an ancient sanctuary, stone quarries, and signs of funeral pyres that date deep into Cyprus's classical antiquity. It is an atmospheric place to walk after swimming. About eight kilometers from the race area, on another coastal peninsula, lie the weathered ruins of the ancient city of Thronoi. Archaeologists working this windswept point have uncovered city walls, early sanctuaries, and cave dwellings dating to the Hellenistic and Roman eras.

The deep maritime heritage of the area is celebrated inland at the Thalassa Museum in Ayia Napa, where visitors can view a full-scale replica of a classical merchant vessel from around 300 BCE that was salvaged from the regional seabed.

Nissi Beach and Fig Tree Bay: islets and sheltered shallows

Just down the shoreline from the marina, Nissi Beach stretches for 500 meters of bright sand sheltered by a low, rocky islet covered in native coastal scrub. Swimmers can easily wade or paddle across the shallow sandbar to reach the uninhabited islet, whose barrier position keeps the bay calm and pristine. Long before modern tourists arrived, ancient mariners made use of this sheltered shore: archaeological excavations in 2005 uncovered fire-making tools left by stone-age visitors roughly 12,000 years ago. Fig Tree Bay presents a 500-meter shoreline named after the fig trees. An uninhabited, scrub-covered islet sits just offshore, easily reachable by swimming across the calm, shallow sound. During municipal work in 2010, an ancient Greek tomb was uncovered right along the beach.

The coastal strip surrounding Ayia Napa boasts 27 distinct beaches, 14 of which hold Blue Flag certification for outstanding water quality and cleanliness. With its sheltered bays, the stretch offers an open-water sanctuary where swimmers can race in pristine conditions.
