About the race
Tucked along the southern rim of Samaná Bay beneath the slopes of the Cordillera Oriental, the coastal waters of Miches provide an Atlantic sanctuary of transparent, swell-free seas. Oceanman World Championship — Miches is an international open water swimming race held in Miches, along the Atlantic coast of El Seibo in the Dominican Republic. The global series organized by OceanMan stages its championship final here, marking the event's inaugural Caribbean appearance after three consecutive years in the United Arab Emirates. Swimmers can choose between distances of 500 meters, 2,000 meters, 5,000 meters, and a 10,000-meter marathon swim. Events have featured a colorful Welcome Parade where a chosen swimmer from each nation carries their flag before crowds of supporters.
Once in the water, competitors find a sheltered natural bay with rolling swells below half a meter and visibility stretching 15 to 20 meters down through the water column. Water temperatures sit comfortably between 27 and 28 degrees Celsius, making wetsuits entirely unnecessary across every distance.
Costa de los Uveros: From Remote Fishing Outpost to Miches Bay
Miches is positioned on the northeastern Atlantic coast of the Dominican Republic, sheltered between the green northern slope of the Eastern Mountain Range and the expansive waters of Samaná Bay. The coastline twists into an irregular pattern of natural points and secluded coves that buffer incoming Atlantic energy. Swimmers enter a body of water shaped by these contours. The coastal settlement first took root during the nineteenth century as an isolated base for fishing expeditions arriving from Santa Cruz de Hicayagua. Long before receiving its modern name, seafaring locals called this shoreline the Costa de los Uveros after the dense wild sea grape plants that carpeted the dunes. While the small fishing camps have transformed into a seaside town, the surrounding coastline preserves the quiet, unhurried character of its founding years.
Lagunas Redonda y Limón: Coral Sand and Mangrove Reserves
Just eleven kilometers down the coast from the race area, the coastal environment expands into the 53-square-kilometer Reserva científica natural lagunas Redonda y Limón. Here, broad beaches of pale coral sand rest over submerged beds of underlying coral rock. High ridges of the Cordillera Oriental capture the moisture of Atlantic trade winds. At the heart of this coastal reserve, Laguna Redonda connects directly with the sea through the winding Celedonio canal. Extensive forests of red mangrove border nearly the entire lagoon edge, broken only by scattered patches of reeds where sea tides mix with freshwater runoff. Reaching depths of barely two meters, the waters of Laguna Redonda and neighboring Laguna Limón are home to crabs, snook, tarpon, mojarras, and tilapia. Overhead and along the roots, great egrets, pied-billed grebes, black-crowned night herons, common gallinules, and roseate spoonbills wade through the protected shallows.
Samaná Bay: Humpback Whale Migrations off the Coast
Every winter humpback whales migrate into Samaná Bay to mate and give birth; these immense ocean giants measure between 14 and 17 meters long and can weigh up to 40 metric tons.
Playa Arriba to Montaña Redonda: Sand, Coconut Stews, and Merengue
Once the race wraps up, the local beaches offer an effortless retreat into coastal relaxation. Stretches like Playa Arriba and El Morro draw swimmers for barefoot strolls along the ocean, horseback rides over packed sand, and afternoons resting in hammocks strung beneath the coconut palms. Local beach kitchens highlight coastal flavors rooted in fresh seafood. Post-swim meals center around freshly caught fish fried crisp, crunchy smashed tostones, and savory stews simmered with freshly pressed coconut milk. When dusk settles over town, the rhythm of merengue and bachata drifts from corner cafes and open-air bars, inviting neighbors and visiting swimmers to unwind together.
