About the race
Sheer limestone towers known as mogotes dominate the Andaman horizon off Ao Nang, dropping vertical rock faces directly into warm tropical waters. Oceanman Krabi is an open water swimming event held in the Andaman Sea off the coast of Ao Nang in Krabi, Thailand. Staged as part of the worldwide Oceanman series, the competition immerses swimmers in a dramatic seascape of soaring karst bluffs and emerald channels. The event takes place in March, when the tropical sea conditions are well suited for long-distance routes. Swimmers can choose between four distances: a 500-meter sprint, a 2,000-meter race, a 5,000-meter course, and a 10,000-meter marathon swim.
Khlong Muang Beach: the Oceanman Krabi venue
Oceanman Krabi 2026 was scheduled for 28–29 March at Khlong Muang Beach, in the Nong Thale Subdistrict of Mueang District, Krabi Province. Khlong Muang Beach stretches 1.5 kilometres along the Andaman Sea coast of Krabi, about 20 minutes from Ao Nang Beach. The beach has two sections: a wide sandy stretch to the south and a narrow curved strip to the north, where longtail boats anchor. The race distances carry the series names: Oceanman for the 10 km, Half Oceanman for the 5 km, Sprint Oceanman for the 2 km and Oceankids/Team for the 500 m. At Oceanman Krabi, each distance has men's and women's individual races, plus men's, women's and mixed team events. A junior sports team co-founded in 2019 by a local resort teaches children from the nearby Ban Klong Muang School to swim.
Phang Nga Bay and the drowned karst landscapes
The Krabi River discharges near Krabi town into Phang Nga Bay across a marine basin of four hundred square kilometers. This entire seascape is defined by mogotes—isolated limestone hills with near-vertical walls that rise abruptly from both the mainland plains and the sea floor. Around ten thousand years ago, lower global sea levels allowed humans to walk directly between Phuket and Krabi. Today, Phang Nga Bay encloses forty-two distinct islands amidst shallow marine waters, intertidal forested wetlands, seagrass beds, and vibrant coral reefs. Among the most famous formations in the bay is Ko Ta Pu, a dramatic limestone pillar standing twenty meters off the main beach of Khao Phing Kan.
The Poda Archipelago: Talay Waek and offshore reefs
Looking out toward the open horizon from Ao Nang, swimmers gaze upon the Poda archipelago rising eight kilometers offshore. This cluster of islands includes Koh Poda alongside its smaller neighbors Koh Kai, Koh Mo, and Koh Thap. At low tide, a remarkable natural phenomenon known as Talay Waek, or the separated sea, appears between Koh Kai, Koh Mo, and Koh Thap. As the water recedes, a pristine sandbar physically connects the three islands, allowing visitors to walk between them. When the tide returns, the shifting currents submerge the path once more, restoring the unbroken expanse of blue water. Fringing coral reefs surround Koh Thap, creating an underwater haven for snorkeling and aquatic exploration. Koh Poda and its surrounding waters are safeguarded under the Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, a marine protected area established in 1983.
Railay Peninsula: sea cliffs, caves, and sheltered sands
The peninsula of Railay is completely severed from mainland road access by towering limestone cliffs. West Railay Beach is flanked on both sides by soaring stone precipices. These sheer rock faces are riddled with natural pockets and overhanging limestone roofs that have made Railay renowned for climbing. On the rocky islands around Krabi, athletes also practice deep water soloing, scaling sea cliffs without ropes directly above the safety of deep water. Swimming along these headlands gives you an up-close perspective of raw geological power rising directly out of the swell. Along the interior trail leading toward Ton Sai lies Phet Cave, cutting into the karst ridge. East Railay is largely blanketed by dense mangrove forests unsuitable for swimming.
Historically, this isolated peninsula was inhabited only by a handful of fishing families who cultivated the soil beside the sea. When the 2004 tsunami struck the region, Railay Beach was fortunate not to be severely affected, preserving its sheltered shores and coastal charm.
Maritime trade roots and the Chao Le sea nomads
Human occupation of the Krabi coastline reaches back deep into prehistoric antiquity. At Lang Rong Rien cave, archaeologists unearthed forty-thousand-year-old artifacts that rank among the earliest evidence of human settlement in Southeast Asia. Elsewhere around the rock shelters of Phang Nga Bay, prehistoric rock art and cliff paintings date back more than one thousand years. At Khuan Luk Pat, excavations uncovered a bronze seal from the second century CE engraved with the likeness of a two-masted sailing ship. On Ko Lanta Yai, the Chao Le, or sea gypsies, maintain their traditional way of life sustained almost entirely by artisanal fishing. Further offshore, the coral-fringed islands of Ko Lanta National Park offer world-class diving sites teeming with marine life.
Krabi River estuary: Ko Klang and mangrove nursery wetlands
The Krabi River empties into the sea between the twin limestone bluffs of Khao Khanap Nam. In 2001, this sprawling estuary was designated a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. The river mouth sustains vast mangrove forests that act as a vital ecological nursery for mud crabs and diverse juvenile marine species. Nestled right at the mouth of the Krabi River lies Ko Klang, an island crisscrossed by intricate tidal waterways. Reached exclusively by wooden longtail boats gliding through lush estuarine channels, mangrove forests cover eighty percent of Ko Klang's total land area. Along the water's edge, local villagers have constructed stilt houses resting on piers and timber decks directly over the shifting tides.
The extensive swamplands around Ko Klang provide a rich habitat for aquatic creatures. Phang Nga Bay supports eighty-eight bird species, eighty-two fish species, eighteen reptiles, three amphibians, and seventeen species of mammals. After crossing the finish line off the sands of Ao Nang, you can look out across the Andaman Sea.
