About the race
Early in the morning, the calm surface of Praia do Centro reflects Ilha de João da Cunha, shielding the entire bay from the open swells. This sheltered arena hosts the 6hs de Porto Belo, an open water swimming event set in the sea waters of Porto Belo, Santa Catarina. Swimmers gather on the sand just before dawn as the bay wakes up in absolute stillness, preparing to take to the water at first light in October. The competition program accommodates every level of endurance, offering standard distances of 600 m, 2,000 m, 3,000 m, 5,000 m, 10,000 m, 15,000 m, and a grueling 21,600 m marathon course. At the core of the event lies the continuous six-hour challenge, which athletes can tackle either as solo endurance swimmers or in relay teams composed of two, three, five, or ten participants. Organized by Correr e Nadar, the meeting brings together experienced long-distance veterans and open-water novices arriving side by side from surrounding coastal and valley communities across Santa Catarina.
Praia do Centro: sheltered water behind Ilha de Porto Belo
The physical geography of Praia do Centro makes it an exceptional natural arena for open-water lap swimming. The calm, sheltered bay of Praia do Centro creates an easy, stable rhythm for stroke pacing, making the bay a favorite haven for sailors, kayakers, and stand-up paddleboarders alongside distance swimmers. Beneath the surface, the water remains notably transparent, giving swimmers clear visibility down into the shallows as they turn through the course. These waters function as a protected natural nursery for local marine life, adding a peaceful backdrop to hours spent rhythmically circling the bay.
Ilha de Porto Belo: sambaquis and nineteenth-century whale factory ruins
Across the channel, the island and the surrounding coastline carry deep traces of early human settlement that frame the swim course. The municipality preserves twelve registered archaeological sites, including prehistoric shell mounds known as sambaquis and ancient rock inscriptions. Directly on the island's shoreline rest the stone remnants of maritime industrial history. A whale oil processing plant was constructed around 1824 by João da Cunha Bittencourt, a prominent nineteen-century enterprise that once processed oil along this channel.
The municipal pier and the tainha net fishermen of Porto Belo
Back along the active waterfront of Praia do Centro, the municipal pier forms the lively epicenter of local maritime transit. The pier serves as the bustling departure station for shuttle boats crossing over to the island, small artisanal fishing skiffs, and tenders ferrying passengers ashore from larger vessels resting further out in the sound. This stretch of sand also remains steeped in living coastal heritage, preserving the traditional artisanal fishing practice known as the Arrasto de Praia da Tainha. Officially recognized as protected cultural heritage, this seasonal net haul continues to unite local coastal families who pull their nets directly onto the beach just as generations have done before them. Despite the daily bustle around the wooden pier and harbor, swimmers have entirely free water ahead of them. The municipality maintains an exclusive, designated swimming perimeter along the beach that separates bathers from motorized watercraft.
