About the race

When the high Sicilian summer recedes into autumn, Mondello's wide turquoise basin hosts a seasonal swimming ritual framed by sheer sea cliffs. The MYKELEYA – Trofeo Iano Monaco is an open water sea race in the Golfo di Mondello on the coast of Palermo in Sicily, covering a classic 1,500-metre course. Established in 1993, the event is organized by Extrema ASD to honor the memory of its founder, Iano Monaco, an aquatic sports pioneer and beloved figure in Sicilian athletic history. Held each autumn, the crossing serves as a traditional rite of passage marking the seasonal turn from hot summer days into the gentler rhythm of October. The race line charts a direct crossing across the crystalline bay, stretching from the rocky point of Punta Celesi across to the sands fronting Piazza Mondello.

Setting out into the open water of the gulf offers swimmers clean sighting lines and remarkable clarity over the pale sandy seabed. For pool-trained competitors accustomed to tiled lanes and calm surface conditions, navigating the open bay acts as a genuine baptism of fire. Yet the sheltered sweep of the gulf keeps the sea inviting and crystalline, rewarding those making the transition into open water.

Capo Gallo: carbonate cliffs and the marine protected waters

The swimming arena is enclosed between the promontory of Monte Pellegrino and the carbonate ramparts of Monte Gallo, a steep massif formed between the Triassic and Middle Eocene periods by continental collision. These coastal mountains cup the Conca d'Oro basin against the Tyrrhenian Sea. About three kilometres from the race area, the shoreline enters the Capo Gallo - Isola delle Femmine Marine Protected Area, established in 2002 to safeguard over two thousand hectares of coast. Underwater, the seabed drops along submerged stepped terraces that preserve the outline of ancient coastlines carved when sea levels were far lower. Along the rocky fringe, mollusc shells form a living vermetid trottoir, while lush meadows of Posidonia oceanica root across the sand and cling directly to bare rock surfaces in a rare marine display.

Around the headland, accessible only from the sea, lies the Grotta dell'Olio, a cavern spanning a circular chamber twenty metres wide. A ten-metre-high domed ceiling features an overhead fissure that lets daylight illuminate the white sand floor with vivid turquoise reflections. Standing on the northern tip of the promontory above, the Capo Gallo Lighthouse has marked the western entrance to the Gulf of Palermo since 1854, flashing its lantern forty metres above the sea.

Porto di Mondello: ancient fisheries and coastal watchtowers

At the northern bend of the gulf, leaning against the eastern flank of Monte Gallo, lies the Porto di Mondello. The harbor's seafaring heritage stretches back to the fifth century BC, when these sheltered waters served as an active anchorage within the Phoenician maritime trade network. High above the coast in the mountain cliffs, the sacred Grotta Regina served as a prehistoric cave sanctuary during the early Neolithic era, before Phoenician mariners rededicated the shrine to the goddess Isis. Between the ninth and eleventh centuries under Arab rule, a dedicated fishing settlement grew along the protected shore. By the fifteenth century, a commercial tuna fishery was constructed at the harbor, operating continuously across the centuries until the early twentieth century. The sole remaining structure of that ancient tonnara is a fortified stone watchtower, originally raised along the shore to protect fishermen from corsair raids.

The Mondello seafront: Art Nouveau villas and stilt pavilions

Before becoming Palermo's premier seaside resort, the Mondello waterfront was an uninhabited, malarial marshland frequented only by local fishermen. A comprehensive land reclamation program carried out at the close of the nineteenth century drained the swamps, turning the wild coastal plain into an expansive seaside retreat. That late-nineteenth-century development laid the foundations for the vibrant promenade and beach culture that greet swimmers stepping out of the water today. Resting directly over the water, the Antico Stabilimento Balneare stands as the historic centerpiece of the bay. Erected on an extensive stilt structure extending into the sea, its concrete pillars represented one of the first major reinforced concrete engineering projects in Palermo.

The bathhouse survived military occupation by Italian, German, and Allied forces during World War II, continuing to stand proud above the surf despite the loss of its original interior furnishings. Along the shore, the beach unfolds in a broad ribbon of fine white sand, where the sea shifts from pale green to brilliant turquoise. The boulevard running parallel to the sand is studded with Liberty-style villas designed by Ernesto Basile, showcasing decorative facades, rounded balconies, and intricate stained glass. As evening arrives, the old fishing village at the northern tip of the gulf comes alive with open-air tables, welcoming swimmers to trattorias and fry shops perfumed by the scent of fresh local catch on the grill.
